The People's Representative Assembly or Assembly of Representatives ( Arabic مجلس نواب الشعب Majlis Nuwwāb asch-Scha'b , French Assemblée des représentants du peuple - ARP ) has been the legislative body of Tunisia since 2014.
According to Article 50 of the Tunisian Constitution of 2014, this unicameral parliament represents the Tunisian people; through them it exercises its legislative power. According to the ideas of the constitutional fathers, a balance of power should be established between the president and the parliament, which is endowed with a strong position ( semi-presidential system of government ), in order to prevent autocratic rule.
The People's Representative Assembly consists of 217 members who were first elected in the parliamentary elections on October 26, 2014 . The outgoing President of the Constituent Assembly, Mustafa Ben Jaafar , convened the constituent meeting of the People's Representatives' Assembly for December 2nd in accordance with Article 57 of the Constitution. When it was constituted on December 2, 2014, it replaced the Constituent Assembly , which had also served as a general legislative body in the transition phase after the Tunisian Revolution . It was again preceded by the election to the Constituent Assembly in October 2011. Under the long-standing, autocratically ruling President Ben Ali , a two-tier parliament consisting of a Chamber of Deputies and a Chamber of Advisors was last , but was firmly in the hands of the President and his party, the Constitutional Democratic Collection (RCD).
In the first legislative period, the Presidium of the People's Representatives' Assembly was elected on December 4, 2014, after the MPs had not yet agreed on candidates at the first meeting on December 2. As Article 59 of the Constitution stipulates that the President should be elected at the first session, the first session had to be extended and adjourned until December 4th. President of the parliament was Mohamed Ennaceur from the strongest party Nidaa Tounes . He has two Vice Presidents, the Ennahda politician Abdelfattah Mourou and Faouzia Ben Fodha ( UPL ).
