The Assembleia da República (Eng. "Assembly of the Republic") has been the one-chamber parliament of the Southeast African Republic of Mozambique since the first free elections in 1994 . Between the sham elections of 1977 , two years after the country gained independence from Portugal, and 1994, the official name of the Mozambican parliament was the National People's Assembly ( Assembleia Nacional Popular ).

The first president of the People's Assembly was Samora Machel , and Verónica Macamo has been president since 2010 .

  • The Assembly of the Republic currently has 250 members. Since the last elections in 2014, 144 members of the ruling party Frente da Libertação de Moçambique (FRELIMO), 89 members of the country's largest opposition party, Resistência Nacional Moçambicana (RENAMO) and 17 members of the Movimento Democrático de Moçambique (MDM) have been represented in it. At least 5% of the votes must be won nationwide in order to win seats as a party ( five percent hurdle ).

    Of the 250 members, 99 are female.

    Parliament has set up ten standing committees ( Comissões Parlamentares ) for further parliamentary work, nine of which are departmental. According to the Parliament's rules of procedure (“Regimento da Assembleia da República”), a committee consists of at least five and no more than 15 members, who are appointed by the political groups in plenary.
