The Senate is the upper house of the Parliament of Kenya . The first Senate of Kenya was established in 1963, but abolished in 1966. Only with the constitutional referendum in Kenya in 2010 , he was reinstated and since then is the National Assembly as a first chamber opposite.
The Senate building is located in the capital, Nairobi .
In accordance with Article 98 of the Kenyan Constitution, the Senate consists of 67 members. Of these, 47 are directly elected representatives of the counties , 16 women, who are appointed by the parties in proportion to their election results, and 4 MPs (2 men, 2 women), 2 of whom represent youth and 2 disabled people. The speaker of the Senate is a member ex officio .
Duties and powers
- Represents the counties
- Participates in the legislative process and must pass laws affecting the counties for them to come into effect
- Determines the distribution of state funds among the counties
- May remove the president, vice president, county governors, and vice governors from office .
