Arthur Henry Attwell (born August 5, 1920 - March 2, 1991 ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England from 1983 to 1989 .

Attwell earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Divinity degree in theology . He worked from 1953 to 1960 as Dean of Kimberley in the province of Northern Cape in South Africa . On June 28, 1953, he was officially installed in St Cyprian's Cathedral in Kimberley. During Attwell's tenure, the construction of St Cyprians Cathedral was driven forward. In 1954, the building material for the cathedral tower was ordered. In August 1959, shortly before the end of Attwell's tenure as Dean, the foundation stone for the tower was laid. He returned to Great Britain in early 1960. He was from 1960 to 1972 "Rector" (pastor) at St Michael's Church in Workington and Archdeacon of Westmorland and Furness ( Archdeacon of Westmorland and Furness ). Attwell's widow, Mrs. Muriel Attwell, bequeathed his substantial theological library of over 4,000 books to St Michael's Church after his death. The "Bishop Attwell Library" is located in the north aisle after the church has been rebuilt .

From 1972 to 1978 he was then Residenzkanoniker ( Canon residentiary ; Canon) at the Carlisle Cathedral . On August 26, 1983, he was named Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England, succeeding Vernon Nicholls . He was ordained a bishop on September 14, 1983 . As Bishop of Sodor and Man, Attwell had an " ex officio " seat on the Legislative Council of the Isle of Man . In 1989 he retired. He was succeeded as Bishop of Sodor and Man by Noel Jones .

He was also a member of the Department of Education and the War Pensions Committee. He was also a member of the Manx Museum and National Trust on the Isle of Man.

Attwell spoke u. a. against Sunday sales and the opening of shops on Sundays and public holidays. In the Tynwald he spoke on questions of education and culture , u. a. to the Manx Museum and archeology issues . In 1983 he sharply opposed state-licensed gambling in a debate about the Manx Casino ( Resolution for legislation to make casino laws permanent ; TC of November 16, 1983). In 1985 he demanded that a single casino be sufficient for the Isle of Man ( Casino Bill ; LC of April 23, 1985). Attwell was an opponent of the lottery in Great Britain; he said he was not interested in sponsoring the state lottery but was ready to accept it. Instead of a lottery, he preferred state charitable grants ( Resolution to approve Public Lottery Regulations 1984 ; TC of December 11, 1984). He also called for the fight against illegal drugs ( Resolution to adopt recommendations of the Advisory Council of Drug Misuse ; TC of October 22, 1985).
