Noel Jones

Noel Debroy Jones , also Noël Jones , CB (born December 25, 1932 in Wales , † August 25, 2009 in Scarborough , North Yorkshire ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England from 1989 to 2003 .

Jones was born to Brinley and Gwendoline Jones. He attended Haberdashers' West Monmouth School. He studied at St David's College, University of Wales , Lampeter . In preparation for his priesthood, he attended Wells Theological College . In 1955 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career as vicar ( curate ) from 1955 to 1957 at St James' Church in Tredegar and then at St Mark's Church in Newport in the Diocese of Monmouth . From 1960 to 1962 he was pastor ( Vicar ) in Kano in Nigeria . In 1962 he joined the Royal Navy as a naval chaplain ( Naval Chaplain ) . In this capacity he was stationed in Brunei (1962) and Borneo (1963). He completed an officer course with the Royal Marines and was stationed in Aden in 1967 with the 42nd Commando of the Royal Marines . From 1974 to 1977 he worked as "Staff Chaplain" in the British Ministry of Defense. In 1983 he took over the post of honorary chaplain courtesy of the Queen ( Honorary Chaplain to the Queen ); he held this office until 1989. From 1984 to 1989 he was Chaplain of the Fleet (chaplain of the fleet) and Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) of the Royal Navy. In 1986 he was named Companion of the Order of the Bath .

In 1989 Jones left the Royal Navy. In 1989, he succeeded Arthur Attwell , Bishop of Sodor and Man in the Church of England. As Bishop of Sodor and Man, Jones had an " ex officio " seat on the Isle of Man's Legislative Council . He retired in April 2003. He was succeeded as Bishop of Sodor und Man by Graeme Knowles .

He was also a member of the Department of Education (1989–1991) and the War Pensions Committee (1989–2003). In 1989 he was a member of the Trustee Council of King William's College on the Isle of Man.

Jones was a largely conservative cleric; he spoke u. a. against Sunday sales and the opening of shops on Sundays and public holidays. He was a representative of Anglo-Catholicism . A membership in Forward in Faith , a conservative association of the High Church within the Church of England, he denied.

In his retirement he lived in North Yorkshire. In 1969 he married Joyce Barbara Leelavathy Arulanandam, whom he met in Malaysia during his time in the Royal Navy in the Far East . The marriage had two children, a son and a daughter. His hobbies included squash , swimming , music , fishing , family , and earlier rugby as an active player. In the spring of 2009, Jones was diagnosed with bladder cancer . Jones died on August 28, 2009 at the age of 76 at St Catherine's Hospice in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The funeral service followed by a cremation ceremony took place on September 14, 2009 in the All Saints Church in York . The main celebrant was Bishop Robert Ladds ; the sermon was delivered by David Hope , the former Archbishop of York .
