David Michael Hope, Baron Hope of Thornes , KCVO (born April 14, 1940 ) was the Anglican Archbishop of York from 1995 to 2005 , Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of York and Primate of England and thus the second highest dignitary of the Church of England after the Archbishop of Canterbury .

Hope studied theology after completing his schooling and initially worked as an Anglican clergyman after graduating. In 1985 he became Anglican Bishop of Wakefield and from 1991 Anglican Bishop of London .

On June 30, 2004, he and the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and other Anglican bishops wrote an open letter to Tony Blair in which these bishops expressed their deep concern about government policies regarding the deployment of British troops in Iraq.

In 1995 the British LGBT activist Peter Tatchell publicly stated that Hope was gay and criticized Hope as part of a campaign by the organization OutRage! . Hope explained that his sexual identity was a "gray zone" and that he had decided to lead a celibate life and lived very happily.

In 2004 Hope publicly stated that the Anglican Church was in danger of breaking up. He named the different perspectives worldwide in the assessment of the approval of women's ordination and the blessing of same-sex couples as the cause .

On August 1, 2004, it was announced that Hope would step down as archbishop and become vicar of Saint Margaret's Church in Ilkley . On February 28, 2005, he took up his post in Ilkley. He was succeeded in the office of Archbishop of York by John Sentamu .

After Hope had been a spiritual member of the House of Lords from 1990 to 2005 , he was promoted to Life Peer in 2005 as Baron Hope of Thornes , of Thornes in the County of West Yorkshire .

In May 2013, there were complaints that Hope had failed to refer complaints to the police about the former Dean of Manchester for child sexual abuse in 1999 while serving as Bishop of York . Hope said that he was acting in accordance with Church rules in such cases when he released the accused from his duties as a priest. Today, however, he regrets that he did not inform the police at the time, Hope said.

On April 30, 2015, Hope voluntarily retired and left the House of Lords under the rules of the House of Lords Reform Act 2014.
