history

St. Peter Church
Lampeter

Lampeter was in former County Cardiganshire ; this was one of the royal counties created by Edward I after his victory over Llywelyn the Last ( Llywelyn Ein Llyw Olaf ) at Cilmeri in 1282; Lampeter thus fell under the immediate rule of the crown. Still, this had little impact on the city's cultural life, Welsh language and culture. City charter was granted in 1284; and subsequently the market right was granted by further documents; Market and fairs were held in the High Street until the 1930s, as was Dali's horse market.

The Castle

The oldest documents show that Owain Gwynedd built the royal castle of Pont Steffan (Stephen's Bridge) in 1187 . The remains of the structure later became the foundations for the Charles Robert Cockerell | College building , now part of the University of Wales.

university

university

Lampeter is the smallest university town in both Wales and the United Kingdom . The university ensured that the urban population grew by an average of 1000 people, which gave the rural city a certain cosmopolitan flair. The city is best known for the University of Wales, Lampeter , formerly St David's University College , which was founded in 1822. The university building was constructed in an Oxbridge Quadrangle style in 1827 ; The architect was CR Cockerell . The campus is in the Ceredigion Hills.

In 1971 the College of St David's University College ( Coleg Prifysgol Dewi Sant ) became part of the Federal University of Wales . With fewer than 2,000 students on campus, it was one of the smallest public universities in Europe .

In 2008 it was announced that teaching would be terminated; as part of the reorganization to create a new university in West Wales, it is to be resumed in the University of Wales Trinity Saint Davids ( Carmarthen ), which will be created in 2010 .

Culture

Lampeter hosted the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1984 . This event is considered one of the most important in the history of the Eisteddfod, as it was then when the farmers expressed their support for the striking miners during the great mine strike in 1984/85 and for the first time the agricultural and industrial part of the Welsh population spoke with one voice.
Of the city's 1,989 inhabitants (1991), 1,410 speak the Welsh language.

Lampeter and its surroundings are home to the Theater Theatr Felin-fach in Felinfach , a museum and a number of small shops.

Rail transport

In 1866 Lampeter was connected to the rail network by the Manchester and Milford Railway . The railway line connected Carmarthen and Aberystwyth . From 1911 the Lampeter, Aberayron and New Quay Light Railway connected the coastal region of Aberaeron . The line to Aberaeron was closed in 1951 for passenger traffic; passenger transport from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth was continued until January 1965, when this line was also closed, part of the route still exists and is operated by a railway company in the summer months.
