Ceredigion ( Welsh Sir Ceredigion ) is a principal area in west Wales . The administrative seat is Aberaeron , the largest city is Aberystwyth .

Part of the University of Wales , which is spread across the entire country, is located in Lampeter . A former important port was the city of Cardigan in the south of the district.

Cardiganshire

Ceredigion is the Welsh name for Cardiganshire , the administrative district is largely the same area as the traditional county of Cardiganshire / Ceredigion . It is bounded to the south by the River Teifi , Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire , to the west by the Irish Sea , to the east by Brecknockshire , Radnorshire and Montgomeryshire and to the north by Merionethshire . The historic capital is Cardigan. In 1961 Cardiganshire had 53,564 inhabitants on 1,793 km².

Cardiganshire was an administrative county until 1974 when it became the District of Ceredigion of the newly formed County of Dyfed . Since the administrative reform of 1996, Ceredigion has been a principal area . Ceredigion has county status.
