Rhondda Cynon Taf [ ˈr̥ɔnða ˈkənɔn ˈtaːv ] is a Principal Area with the status of a County Borough in south Wales .

The county borough is bordered by Merthyr Tydfil and Caerphilly to the east, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan to the south, Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot to the west, and Powys to the north . The main towns are Aberdare , Mountain Ash and Pontypridd . In terms of population, Rhondda Cynon Taf ranks second of all Welsh counties.

history

The county borough was formed on April 1, 1996 by a merger of the districts of Cynon Valley, Rhondda and Taff-Ely (excluding the parishes Creigiau and Pentyrch , which came to Cardiff) of the then dissolved administrative county Mid Glamorgan .

economy

The region was the heartland of Welsh coal mining in the South Wales Valleys until the mines closed . The last mine in the Rhondda Valleys , Mardy Colliery, was shut down in 1990. The region was also a center of the British steel industry. Because of the decline of these two main industries, the regional administration is trying to attract other industrial and especially service companies.

administration

The area is administered by the Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council .

Partnerships

Others

Ferndale and other locations in Rhondda Cynon Taf were used as the filming locations for the exterior filming of the television series Stella by and with Ruth Jones . The series takes place in the fictional Welsh location "Pontyberry".
