Ruth Alexandra Elizabeth Jones , MBE , pseudonym Vanessa Jenkins (born September 22, 1966 in Bridgend , Wales ) is a Welsh actress, screenwriter and novelist. She was best known in Great Britain for leading roles in the series Gavin & Stacey and Stella, which she co-authored . She was seen on German television in the BBC series Little Britain .

Life

Ruth Jones grew up as the daughter of an industrial lawyer and a child psychiatrist in Porthcawl , where she went to the same school as her future colleague Rob Brydon . She studied theater and acting at the University of Warwick and attended the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff for a year. After initially unable to gain a foothold in the theater business and even considering starting a legal career, she got her first professional role as a countess in a production of Figaro's wedding as "pantomime", a typically British form of entertainment theater. With this production of Dominic Cookes troupe Pan Optic she went on tour through Great Britain. At the invitation of Rob Brydon, she joined an improvisational theater group in Bath , which also included Julia Davis , with whom Jones later worked again on the sitcom Nighty Night .

From 1991 Ruth Jones appeared on the television and radio program of BBC Wales . She has also returned to major stages such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theater . In 1999 she had a supporting role in the hit comedy film East is East .

She then played Kelly in four seasons of the comedy series Fat Friends ( ITV ). She has also appeared in several BBC comedy series: as pub counterwoman Myfanwy in Little Britain , as Magz in Saxondale and as Linda in Nighty Night .

Ruth Jones and James Corden, 2008

The series Gavin & Stacey (2007-2010), which Jones wrote with James Corden , whom she met while filming the series Fat Friends , and also produced it, was a great success . The series revolves around a couple in love - the Englishman Gavin and the Welshwoman Stacey - and their more or less bizarre family members and friends. It was filmed in the Welsh seaside resort of Barry and in the UK Billericay . The humor of the series is fed by the insurmountable conflict between middle-class English and working-class Welsh people and the Welsh English that the Welsh speak in the series. Ruth Jones played Nessa Jenkins, Stacey's eccentric friend with a dark past, on the show. The role with its catchphrase "What's Occurin '?" Made Jones a nationally known star in Great Britain. In addition to Mathew Horne and Joanna Page in the title roles, the ensemble also included James Corden, Larry Lamb , Alison Steadman , Rob Brydon, Melanie Walters and Sheridan Smith . The series won two BAFTAs and four British Comedy Awards . The country song Islands in the Stream , performed by Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon on the series, was recorded in 2009 by the two under the role names Vanessa Jenkins and Bryn West with Tom Jones and Robin Gibb and released as a single for the charity Comic Relief . The single reached number 1 on the British charts.

In 2008, Jones also starred in the BBC literary adaptations Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Little Dorrit and in two episodes of the BCC series The Street . Further appearances in television shows and series followed. In 2011 she played the actress Hattie Jacques, well-known from the Carry-On… film series, in the TV movie Hattie on BBC Four.

In 2008 Ruth Jones founded the production company Tidy Productions (named after another catch phrase by Nessa Jenkins) with her husband, producer David Peet. Tidy Productions produced the radio series Ruth Jones' Sunday Brunch for BBC Radio Wales from 2008–2009 and has also worked with BBC Two, BBC Three and BBC Wales. In 2009 the company produced the television film Ar y Tracs about the crew of the Swansea – London train for the broadcaster S4C, based on an idea by Ruth Jones . She herself plays the Polish train station café employee Ingrid Crenski in the film.

Jones and her company have been producing the series Stella for Sky TV since 2012 , which is based on her own idea and for which she wrote several episodes. Jones plays the title role of Stella Morris, a single mother in the fictional small town of Pontyberry in the South Wales Valleys .

Ruth Jones lives in Cardiff with her husband .
