season 1

The show depicts the romance between Gavin and Stacey. Gavin still lives at home with his parents, Pam and Mick in Essex and spends a lot of time with his best friend, Smithy. Stacey, on the other hand, lives with her widowed mother Gwen in Barry, near Cardiff , Wales , and is often visited by her best friend Nessa. Their differences in origins and culture, however, are no barrier to their romance, which blossoms when they first meet after meeting on business on the phone and talking over the phone. Stacey's guardian, her uncle Bryn, has made it his business to keep an eye out for his niece when he's not obsessed with his faulty satellite navigation system, while Gavin is enthusiastic about his sometimes emotionally unstable mother Pam, who does only the best for her " little prince ”wants. The road to their wedding is sometimes a bit rocky and so the different families and friends of Gavin and Stacey have to learn to get along. The couple's two best friends, Nessa and best man Smithy, get along well, but unfortunately only when they are drunk. Otherwise, the two rather dislike each other and yet there are always one-night stands.

Seasons 2 and 3

In season 2, the honeymoon comes to an end for the newlyweds and so begins for Gavin and Stacey married life in the home of the Shipman family in England. But when the reality of a life in distant Essex sets in for Stacey, she misses her home on Barry Island with her mother Gwen and her uncle Bryn. In the meantime, Nessa and Smithy have to face their own reality: they're not even anything like friends and yet Nessa is pregnant with Gavin's best friend Smithy. Then he leaves her alone when her baby is born.

In Season 3, Gavin and Stacey move to Barry Island, which means a lot of big changes for their families. Pam and Mick have to get used to an empty nest in Essex, while Stacey's mother can look forward to a full house again. Stacey is in her element, but will this finally be the solution to the couple's problem? And how will Gavin settle in Wales ? Smithy questions his friendship with Gavin and his role as a father. action

season 1

The first season begins with the lives of the two main characters Gavin Shipman ( Mathew Horne ) and Stacey West ( Joanna Page ). Gavin is 28 years old and still lives at home with parents Mick Shipman ( Larry Lamb ) and Pam Shipman ( Alison Steadman ) in Billericay , Essex. He and Stacey meet over the phone at work and then decide to meet. The two go on a double date with their best friends Neil "Smithy" Smith ( James Corden ) and Vanessa "Nessa" Jenkins ( Ruth Jones ). The night together ends with Gavin and Stacey returning to a hotel room and sleeping together, just like Nessa and Smithy. Gavin and Stacey fall in love after that night, while Smithy and Nessa are just happy to be able to forget their drunken one-night stand and to have as little contact as possible afterwards. Throughout the remainder of the series, Gavin and Stacey continue their occasionally rocky long-distance relationship before they get engaged and married on April 6, 2007. The first season ends with Nessa wanting to inform Smithy that she is pregnant with his child, but then changes her mind at the last minute and decides not to tell him.

season 2

The second season begins with the return of the bride and groom from their honeymoon in Greece . Gavin and Stacey's in-laws meet again at the Shipman's home, where Nessa has some shocking revelations, especially for Smithy. He learns that Nessa is pregnant by him and although he doesn't like her at all, he assures her that he will support her with the child. In the meantime, Gavin and Stacey, who live with Gavin's parents, run into trouble because Stacey has trouble finding a job and misses her family in Barry. They try to solve the problem by looking for an apartment in Essex , but Stacey is still unsatisfied and is considering moving back to Wales. In the last episode of the second season, Stacey takes off her wedding ring, which Gavin seems very worried and at the same time Nessa's labor begins a month early. Stacey and Gavin's parents rush to Wales to be with Nessa, while Gavin and Smithy's sister Rudi ( Sheridan Smith ) are looking for Smithy and then find him watching football in a pub. In the end, Nessa gives birth to a healthy boy named Neil, and Gavin and Stacey decide to put their differences aside and get back together.

season 3

In season three, Gavin begins his new job in Wales and his parents and Smithy travel to Barry to attend the christening of Nessa's son Neil. In the next episode, Gavin, Stacey, Nessa and their son Neil spend the weekend with Pam and Mick. After a night of alcohol, Nessa and Smithy are believed to have had sex again after waking up in the same bed the next morning. Gavin and Stacey want to have a baby too and Stacey is upset and disappointed when she learns that they may not be able to have children. Gavin is depressed and preoccupied with the subject. Pam, Mickey and Smithy want to cheer him up and arrange a surprise trip to Barry Beach on a sunny holiday . Nessa and Dave fall apart when he learns of their alleged intercourse with Smithy, but the two decide to continue the wedding. In the last episode, Stacey finds out that she is pregnant after all and is overjoyed. Smithy shows up at Ness and Dave's wedding to Neil, asks her not to marry him and accuses her of not loving Dave. Surprisingly, Dave Smithy agrees and the ceremony is canceled. The season ends with the four (Gavin, Stacey, Smithy and Nessa) appearing six months later on Barry Beach with a visibly pregnant Stacey.

Idea & role allocation

The idea for the series came to James Corden during a wedding reception, and he developed the idea with co-writer Ruth Jones , whom he met while filming the ITV drama Fat Friends . Corden claims to have been inspired by the real life story of his best friend Gavin, who met his wife over the phone at work. They presented the idea to the BBC as a one-off piece, but instead asked the BBC for a full series.

The roles of Gavin and Stacey were cast through an audition, but Mathew Horne and Joanna Page were immediately won over by their mutual chemistry. The roles of Nessa and Smithy were written for themselves by Corden and Jones. Some of the other roles were also written specifically for specific actors. Uncle Bryn was written specifically for Rob Brydon , who went to school with Jones, while Pam was written specifically for Alison Steadman , who also worked on Fat Friends. Jones had worked with Julia Davis on her sitcom, Nighty Night , and the role of Dawn was written for her. Corden also starred in The History Boys with Adrian Scarborough , which led to his being selected for the role of Pete. The roles of Mick and Gwen were cast in an audition, while the roles were awarded by Gavin's friends to Cordens co-stars in The History Boys.

debut

A second season was soon commissioned after the series debuted on BBC Three . Commenting on season two, Corden said, “It's the show we wanted to do. If people like it, they like it. If they don't, then they don't. It's a nice feeling that is pretty liberating. ”After that, it wasn't clear at first whether there would be a third season or not. In an interview in April 2008, Jones said that they never really wanted to write a second, let alone a third, season and would wait and see how the Christmas special goes. James Corden and Ruth Jones finished the final draft of the Christmas specials in September 2008 and at the same time ruled out writing a third season due to the high pressure of other work and a recurring desire not to produce a script that was below their standard. After the 2008 Christmas specials premiered, BBC Three aired a making-of documentary entitled 12 Days of Christmas about the special. Corden and Jones finally announced that a third season would be produced on December 21, 2008, shortly before the Christmas special aired, when Jones performed their final BBC Radio Wales Sunday brunch radio show to a live audience on Barry Island .

Awards

The show was nominated for several prizes and also awarded. Two notable awards were the British Academy Television Awards (BAFTAs) Audience Award and the British Comedy Awards Best TV Comedy Award , both in 2008.

At the British Comedy Awards in December of the previous year (2007), the series by Corden and Jones won Best New British TV Comedy and lost in the Best New TV Comedy category to the series Peep Show . James Corden won Best Male Comedy Newcomer and Ruth Jones Best Female Comedy Newcomer. At the same time, the other actors Mathew Horne and Joanna Page were nominated in the same category . The show was also nominated for Best New TV Sitcom at the 2007 Comedy.co.uk Awards and won the award in that category.

In April 2008, Gavin & Stacey won two awards in the British Academy Television Awards . The Audience Award and Best Comedy Performance for James Corden. In December, the series was named Best TV Comedy at the British Comedy Awards 2008.

At the 2009 BAFTAs, Rob Brydon was nominated for Best Comedy Performance in the role of Bryn. In January 2010, Gavin & Stacey won the National Television Awards for Best Comedy .

criticism

In April 2008, immediately after the end of season two of Gavin & Stacey, The Guardian described the series as "the BBC Three's biggest breakout comedy hit since Little Britain, " while Deborah Orr described it as "lovable, unpredictable, well-written and well played and entertaining at the same time. It's a good series that takes its place in a worn comedic development that dates back to The Liver Birds. "

Just before the third season of Gavin & Stacey aired, The Independent described how the series had gone from a respectable debut on BBC Three to an award-winning show with mainstream popularity after the BBC2 Christmas Special. Others felt that the show shouldn't try to surpass itself. However, with mainstream adoption, The Independent felt that the show had all the ingredients to become a "high-profile sitcom in the tradition of Only Fools and Horses and The Royle Family , series after series and Christmas special for Christmas special," although the scriptwriters had already ruled out releasing further full seasons at this point.

In 2019, Gavin & Stacey was named the 17th Greatest UK Sitcom of All Time in a Radio Times poll.
