Life

Robert Brydon Jones and his younger brother Peter (born 1973) are the sons of teacher Joy Brydon and car dealer Howard Jones; she grew up in Baglan, a village near Port Talbot in the Welsh county of Glamorgan in the municipality of Neath Port Talbot .

Until he was 14, Brydon attended the independent private schools St. John's School in Porthcawl , which Eddie Izzard also attended, and the 1993 Dumbarton House School in Swansea . One of his classmates was Catherine Zeta-Jones , from whom he said he once stole the meal money. He later moved to the Porthcawl Comprehensive School, where he became a member of the school's youth theater group; there he also met Ruth Jones , at whose side he played in Gavin & Stacey .

After finishing school, Brydon studied acting at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff , which Anthony Hopkins had previously attended.

His first marriage to Martina Fitchie resulted in his daughter Katie, born in August 1994, son Harry, born in October 1996, and daughter Amy, born in July 1999. After his divorce in 2001, he met producer Claire Holland during the 2002 South Bank Awards. The couple married on October 6, 2006 in Windsor Church and have two sons, Tom, born April 2008, and George, born June 2011. The family lives in Strawberry Hill, Richmond upon Thames , southwest London .

Brydon is an avid supporter and promoter of the Swansea City Football Club . In August 2014, Brydon was one of 200 signatories to an open letter to the British daily The Guardian , which spoke out against the planned independence of Scotland from the United Kingdom in the run-up to the referendum in September of the same year .

Career

Rob Brydon at the EG Awards, 2009

As a child, Brydon claims to have been influenced by comedians Barry Humphries , Frankie Howerd and Woody Allen , and he memorized complete skits by Peter Cook , Dudley Moore and Peter Sellers .

At the age of 20 he left the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff and began his career with BBC Radio Wales as a radio presenter. On his Saturday morning broadcast, he featured stand-up comedian Pete Park-Walker. In the early 1990s, Brydon also worked briefly as a presenter for the home shopping network .

Between 1992 and 1994 he was the main presenter of Rave , one of the youth magazines and music programs of BBC Radio 5 (now BBC Radio 5 Live ), alongside Alan Thompson; during this time he developed the Marion and Geoff series . In addition to his comedy format The Treatment on BBC Radio Five Live, he appeared in 1994 and 1995 in some episodes of the Radio Wales version of the cult comedy Satellite City with Boyd Clack.

After several smaller roles in films and television series, he made his breakthrough on screen in 2000 with the television series Human Remains and Marion and Geoff , written for the BBC, and has since established himself as a character actor in serious roles as well as in comedy . In 2005, he portrayed the controversial theater critic Kenneth Tynan in the television film Kenneth Tynan: In Praise of Hardcore alongside Julian Sands as Laurence Olivier .

In 2003, Brydon first demonstrated his talent as an impersonator to a broad television audience. In the TV quiz show QI he parodied Sir Alec Guinness , James Dean and Michael J. Fox, among others . In the 2008 Christmas show, he also parodied Richard Burton and Tom Jones , with whom he recorded a cover song for a charity a year later.

In 2006, Brydon first appeared on BBC Radio 4's I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue game show ; the then host Humphrey Lyttelton praised Brydon's singing voice as "not bad" ("not bad"). When the team went on tour with non-broadcast stage shows in 2008, he represented Lyttelton as a presenter, who had to be hospitalized for the treatment of an aneurysm of the aorta; Lyttelton died in the hospital after the operation.

On August 25, 2008, Brydon represented Ken Bruce on BBC Radio 2 . On April 1, 2011, he took over its moderation again and imitated Bruce throughout the broadcast as an April Fool's joke ; the joke was resolved at the end of the show by Bruce himself.

In February 2009 it was announced that Brydon was next to Stephen Fry and Jack Dee one of the people who would replace Lyttelton after his death in the 51st season of the show I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue . Also in the first two episodes of the 52nd season, moderated by Dee, as well as in the last two episodes of the season 54 in January 2001, he took part as a guest on the show. Also in 2009 he took over the moderation of Would I Lie to You? From Angus Deayton . , presented an episode of Have I Got News for You and appeared on BBC Radio 4 in Just a Minute .

His alter ego Bryn West from the series Gavin and Stacey written by Ruth Jones and James Corden allowed him to return to his South Welsh roots. In his role as West, he took on the side of the singer Tom Jones and Ruth Jones, also in her role as Vanessa Jenkins from Gavin and Stacy , the single (Barry) Islands in the Stream for the benefit of the charity Comic Relief ; the cover version reached number 1 on the British music charts on March 15, 2009 .

In 2009 and 2010 Brydon made his first stand-up comedy tour in the UK; a recording of this was released on November 23, 2009 under the title Rob Brydon: Live on DVD . During this time he also hosted an episode of the BBC format Live at the Apollo .

On March 30, 2010, Brydon attended Channel 4's Comedy Gala to benefit Great Ormond Street Hospital , which was broadcast live from the O2 Arena in London. That same year, he starred alongside Steve Coogan in Michael Winterbottom's partially improvised sitcom The Trip on BBC Two , in which both actors played fictional versions of themselves in public: Brydon, upbeat and always ready for imitation, and Coogan, misanthrope and angry about not being the international star he thinks he should be.

Between September and October 2011 Brydon played alongside Kenneth Branagh in Francis Veber's The Painkiller at the Lyric Theater in Belfast . In March and April 2016, the play was performed again, also alongside Branagh, at the Garrick Theater in London's West End .

In November 2011, Brydon's book Small Man in a Book was published , the title of which is based on an imitation from his stage program.

At the Diamond Jubilee concert of Elizabeth II , which took place outside Buckingham Palace on June 4, 2012 , he was one of the six presenters .

In addition to his work as a radio host and comedian, Brydon is known as a voice imitator and voice actor. He lent his voice to characters in animated films such as Der Grüffelo , Das Grüffelokind and Für Hund und Katz ist also Platz . He also voiced numerous characters in the computer game adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Discworld ; Among other things, he lent the main character, Lewton, in the computer game Discworld Noir his voice. In the two-part documentary The Pain of Laughter: The Last Days of Kenneth Williams , which describes the last part of Kenneth Williams' life and lets many of his friends and companions have their say, Brydon was the speaker. He is also known as a speaker from advertising and for continuity announcements on BBC One .

Regularly mistaken for Ben Miller in public, they both wore the same clothes and shared a narcissistic kiss in the episode Future of the television series QI (aired February 20, 2009).

Awards

In 2000 and 2001 Brydon received the British Comedy Award and he was nominated three times for a BAFTA Award . He was appointed a member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2013 for his achievements in the fields of comedy, broadcasting and charity. He is also an honorary member of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he previously studied.
