BBC Wales (BBC Cymru Wales) is the headquarters of the BBC in Cardiff for the whole of Wales . The station was founded in 1964 and employs 1,200 people. BBC Wales produces a variety of television and radio programs as well as online offers in English and Welsh.

history

On February 19, 1923, the first broadcast of a radio program in Wales began. The radio station was then known under the name 5WA. The station later became part of the BBC and was included in the BBC Regional Program which was transferred to BBC Home Service in 1939. There were several bases in Wales during World War II. The program was broadcast directly from London, with some regionally produced programs added. The first television broadcast took place on August 15, 1952. The station broadcast the National BBC Television Service Program at the time. In 1957, BBC West opened in neighboring Bristol and also broadcast programs for Wales.

On February 9, 1964, BBC Wales was established to broadcast regional programs for Wales. Two years later, BBC Wales moved into its new building, the Broadcasting House in Llandaff.

BBC Wales operates two television channels and two radio channels that can be received across Wales.

  • BBC One Wales began operating on November 2, 1936. The broadcaster broadcasts a full program in English, which also includes the national and international news BBC Wales Today . The station can be received via Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.
  • BBC Two Wales began operating on September 12, 1965.

In addition to the two transmitters, the S4C transmitter is also operated in the Welsh language. The station broadcasts a full program.

  • BBC Radio Wales is the English-speaking network on which various program formats are broadcast. The live program is broadcast twenty hours a day. For the remaining hours, the BBC World Service broadcasts the program at night.
  • BBC Radio Cymru operates in Welsh. The station also broadcasts various program formats.

Broadcasting House

The Broadcasting House opened in 1966 and has also been the headquarters of BBC Wales since then. It has studios, offices and technical broadcasting facilities. The building is located north of Cardiff in Llandaff near the River Taff. It is located near Danescourt railway station and is also served by Cardiff Bus.

In August 2013 the sale of the BBC Broadcasting House was announced. In 2018 the BBC Wales Broadcasting Center will move into a newly built building south of Cardiff on the area of ​​the central bus station near the main train station.

Roath Lock Studios

The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the BBC National Chorus of Wales moved from Studio 1 to the completed Millennium Center in 2009. Much of the BBC Drama Studios was relocated to the new studios in Roath Lock on Cardiffer Harbor in 2011. The new film production halls were not officially opened until 2012.

BBC National Orchestra of Wales

BBC Wales has an orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, which gives concerts in Cardiff, Swansea and other locations. Most of it is recorded and broadcast on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru.
