BBC Radio Wales
BBC Radio Wales is the English language radio program for Wales and is produced by BBC Cymru Wales , based in Cardiff . It is not to be confused with the Welsh language BBC Radio Cymru .
The station was originally a regional program of the nationwide broadcast BBC Radio 4 and was expanded to a full program in November 1978. It is a news and music entertainment program with a special focus on sports coverage of the Welsh leagues. The program is broadcast 20 hours a day and the BBC World Service takes over at night .
To this day, BBC Radio Wales can only be received nationwide on medium wave ( Washford 882 kHz as well as filling stations in Penmon , Tywyn , Forden and Llandrindod Wells ). This is because medium wave was very popular in Great Britain in the 1970s and FM had little market penetration at that time, which is why the Welsh-language program received the FM chain and the English-language program received the medium wave. Weak VHF filling stations have only recently been activated in the Welsh metropolises, but there is still no nationwide coverage on VHF.
