Sabine Zerbian

Sabine Zerbian (* 1975 in Berlin ) is Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Stuttgart .

Life

After studying abroad for one year at the Universiteit van Amsterdam , Sabine Zerbian studied English , linguistics and psychology at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at the Free University of Berlin . In 2006 she received her doctorate from Humboldt University. The topic of her dissertation was The expression of information structure in Northern Sotho (Bantu). From 2002 to 2007 she worked as a research assistant at the Center for General Linguistics (ZAS) in Berlin. She then worked for three years as a senior lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg . From 2010 to 2013 she was junior professor for experimental phonology at the University of Potsdam . Since June 2012 she has been an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand and since April 2013 Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Stuttgart.

Area of ​​Expertise

Her area of ​​expertise is the phonetic structures in the various languages, especially in English, German and the South African Bantu languages . As a phonologist , she examines in particular sound systems and speech melody and the question of how the meaning of a sentence in languages ​​is influenced by phonetic accentuation. She is concerned with the question of what happens when two different language systems collide in a person.

She is working on a project on Intonation and word order in majority English and heritage Russian across speaker populations , together with Sabine Schulte im Walde on a project on Integrated Research Training Group and on a project on Breaking the Unwritten Language Barrier. From 2014 to 2018 she worked on a project about cross-linguistic interactions in second language prosody.
