Pobol y Cwm ( The People of the Valley ) is a popular soap opera in Welsh produced by the BBC since October 1974 and was the first Welsh series. It is also the longest series produced by the BBC. It is shown on Welsh language channel S4C every day except Saturdays .

Pobol y Cwm is very popular and the most watched show in Wales alongside rugby . There are five new episodes every week. All episodes of the week will then be shown one after the other on Sunday afternoon.

The location of the series Cwmderi is fictional, it lies between the cities of Carmarthen and Llanelli . Families, singles and couples live there. There are shops, a hairdresser, a school and a car repair shop. People meet and chat in the village pub or in a café. The life of the villagers is depicted in a very realistic way. Marital crises, affairs, lack of money, the global financial crisis, lovesickness, pregnancy and drug addiction are shown. Real social and real political developments and discourses are taken up sensitively.

Both English and Welsh language subtitles are available for the series . This makes it very helpful for learners of the Welsh language too.

Internationally known Ioan Gruffudd played Gareth Wyn Harries on the series between 1987 and 1994. Other well-known actors who appeared on the series were Rachel Thomas , Huw Garmon , Gillian Elisa , Ieuan Rhys , Aneirin Hughes , and Gwenno Saunders (from The Pipettes ).
