The Pipettes were a band from Brighton , England . The hallmarks of the three women at the front were dotted dresses, tight high-heeled shoes and synchronized choreography for the stage shows. In addition, there was the male formation "The Cassettes", which supported the vocals as a backing band and in which the manager of the group Bobby Barry also played.

Although the pipettes' music was reminiscent of girl groups of the 1950s and 1960s , they tried to move away from a simple sequel. The often biting texts were set in contrast to harmonic melodies.

Band history

Their manager Bobby Barry founded the group in 2004 with the intention of reviving traditional Phil Spector pop and adding modern elements to it. Other musical influences are girl groups from the 1960s and Motown .

The founding member Julia left in spring 2005 and switched to the band The Indelicates .

In the summer of 2005 some limited vinyl releases appeared: First School Uniform on Unpopular Records , then ABC on Transgressive . The Pipettes then succeeded in signing a contract with Memphis Industries , where The Go! Team are under contract. The Pipettes subsequently released their first high-circulation single and played with bands like The Magic Numbers and British Sea Power .

In June 2006 the band began a tour across England. The debut album We are the Pipettes was released on July 17, 2006 and was recorded in the first two months of 2006 with the assistance of Andy Dragazis and Gareth Parton . The first single Dirty Mind reached number 61 in the UK charts; the successor Your Kisses are Wasted on Me (released on March 27, 2006) made it to number 35. The single Pull Shapes , which was first played on May 15, 2006 on BBC 1 and released on July 3, 2006, rose to # 26 in the UK charts.

On April 18, 2008 it was announced on the official website of the band that the singers Rose Dougall and Rebecca Stephens are leaving the band "to turn to other music projects". The two singers were replaced by Gwenno Saunders' sister Ami Saunders and Anna McDonald. This meant that there was no longer any female member of the band from the original formation (Julia, Rose, Becki). In June 2007 the original drummer Joe Lean had already left the band. Drummer Jason Adelinia replaced him for almost a year before he left the band as well and was replaced by Alex White . Anna McDonald was replaced by Beth Mburu-Bowie in early 2009, before she too left the band and only two female members remained. The two Saunders sisters recorded the second album Earth vs. The Pipettes , which was released on June 28, 2010. A short time later the band officially broke up.

Worth mentioning

All female band members officially gave the family name “Pipette”. The real names of all members are now known.

Singer Rose Dougall rated the band musically: “I suppose […] we've obviously got all the late 50s / early 60s girl bands as a starting point, but around that there's stuff before and all the way up to now that kind of filters through, I think. So we're not just fetishist about this one time ... ".
