The Evolver ( own spelling in capital letters) is an Austrian online magazine . Founded in 1996 , it was the first online magazine in the entire German-speaking area and to this day sees itself as the only independent, non-commercial culture magazine in Austria on the Internet .

Content orientation

The original focus was on pop , cyber and subculture ; since 2010, more attention has been paid to the areas of literature and art .

The programmatic “non-conformance” often caused violent reader reactions and deprived the publication of common classifications. The spectrum of contributions ranges from book , music and film reviews to columns , literary texts or computer games reviews to opera reviews . Polemics , provocation and political incorrectness are frequently recurring elements, although no specific political preference can be identified.

history

Annoyed by the media landscape that was increasingly shaped by marketing strategies in the 1990s and fascinated by the possibilities of the Internet (which was only emerging in Austria at the time), journalists Klaus Hübner and Peter Hiess conceived an online magazine. The aim was to create a platform for cultural reporting that was as independent as possible.

The first issue of Evolver appeared on September 25, 1996. The unexpected media coverage - also reported by ORF - was followed by 8,000 server hits within five days, an extremely high figure at the time. The non-commercial orientation (largely voluntary work of all employees) took its toll in the long term: Despite the steadily increasing number of readers, the magazine had to be discontinued in April 2002 for financial reasons. However, the staff continued to work and supplied the readers via newsletter ; a relaunch took place in September 2003 . Under the direction of Jürgen Fichtinger, the magazine then maintained its place in the increasingly competitive market. In 2010 he was succeeded by Marcus Stöger as editor-in-chief .

In spring 2010 Peter Hiess founded the book publisher Evolver Books together with Robert Draxler . Klaus Hübner's website of the production company Musquito Film , which was founded together with Ray Litke in 2000 , has been operating under the name Evolver Films since the beginning of 2011 .

Design and authors

In addition to texts that are sometimes unusually long for the Internet medium and the broad panorama, the adherence to the old German spelling is striking . Individual specials (such as the online publication of Johann Dolanski'sDolan theory ” or the commented facsimile presentation by Peter Stöger's “das monocle des polyphem”) are run as series over months; the language column "rez gscheid" was included in the knowledge network Austria forum under the keyword Viennese .

The authors include, among many others, writers such as Jürgen Benvenuti , Beppo Beyerl , Martin Compart , Marcel Feige , Hans Langsteiner , Paul Poet , Michel Reimon , Guido Rohm , Marcus Stiglegger , Sylvia Treudl , Manfred Wieninger or Andreas Winterer .
