The Magic Numbers is an indie pop quartet from London - Ealing , consisting of siblings Romeo and Michele Stodart as well as Angela and Sean Gannon.

Band history

The Stodarts were born in Trinidad and lived in New York until they moved to Hanwell, west of London, in the early 2000s. Romeo Stodart met drummer Sean Gannon and the two began making music together. They were joined by their respective sisters Michele Stodart as bassist and Angela Gannon as keyboardist and melodica player . In 2004 they signed a record deal with the EMI label Heavenly Records . Before they even published anything, they already filled a hall like the Kentish Town Forum with 2000 spectators. The following year their debut album The Magic Numbers, named after the band, was released . It received critical acclaim and reached number 7 on the UK charts . The album sold more than half a million times and was awarded double platinum . The album spent a little less than a year in the Top 100. Four songs from the album also made it into the singles charts, the most successful being Love Me Like You , which came in at number 12. Forever Lost reached number 15. The band was also successful in Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands. The album was among the nominations for the 2005 Mercury Prize .

The new single Take a Chance followed in October 2006 and reached number 16. It was followed by the second album Those the Brokes , which barely missed the top 10 and once again reached gold status. Nevertheless, the success was a long way behind that of the debut. Only in Sweden did the album surpass its predecessor in third place. The EP Undecided with 6 songs was released another year later, but did not enter the charts.

Then it took until 2010 for Magical Numbers to get back with album number three. It made it into the charts outside of England and went on tour to Australia. Then they took a break in which Michele Stodart released a solo country album. Then they started an acoustic tour before the album Alias was released in 2014 . It was as successful as The Runaway before , but only in the UK charts. Another four years passed before the fifth album Outsiders , which again made it into the British charts.

Music genre

The British daily The Guardian considers her style of music to be straightforward, guitar-driven. Their polyphonic harmony singing is particularly characteristic. Allmusic compares them in this regard to the Mamas and Papas and The Lovin 'Spoonful from the 1960s.
