The Lovin 'Spoonful is an American rock band formed in New York in January 1965 .
Band history
John Sebastian is the son of a famous harmonica player and began his musical career with Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty in a band called The Mugwumps . After the latter left the band to found The Mamas and the Papas , Sebastian formed the group The Lovin 'Spoonful together with Zalman "Zal" Yanovsky.
The band's name comes from the song Coffee Blues by Mississippi John Hurt and can drug use or ejaculation rewrite.
The group quickly got a record deal . As a result, the debut album Do You Believe in Magic? , whose title song became the first single hit. A whole series of pop singles followed by 1968, most of which occupied the top chart positions and sold millions of copies.
On August 13, 1966, the rock number Summer in the City, which was somewhat harder than her other songs, made it to number 1 on the American charts . It remained the band's only number one hit.
The group was also very successful with film scores, including for What's Up, Tiger Lily? by Woody Allen (1967) or You're a Big Boy Now (1968).
In 1967 Yanovsky left the band due to personal difficulties and was replaced by Jerry Yester, whose brother Jim Yester played for The Association . A year later, when John Sebastian also left to start a solo career, The Lovin 'Spoonful broke up after the release of the album Revolution '69 .
In 1980 all of the original group members met and played songs for the soundtrack of the film One Trick Pony by and with Paul Simon . It remained a one-time affair, however. In 2000 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .
The Lovin 'Spoonful knew how to fuse all American styles of music from blues to jazz to country music into appealing rock . A number of hits emerged, including Do You Believe in Magic , Summer in the City and Daydream . The band was originally supposed to play in the television series that became popular under the name The Monkees .
Zal Yanovsky passed away in 2002. For personal reasons, John Sebastian no longer appears with Lovin 'Spoonful. Boone, Butler and Yester continue to tour with changing accompanying musicians under the old band name, with Butler as the singer.
In 2012 the song Do You Believe in Magic? on "Meet the Pyro", a trailer for the game Team Fortress 2 from Valve used.
Jerry Yester was expelled from the group in 2017 after being arrested on child pornography allegations.
