The mugwumps

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mugwumps were an American band formed in 1964 by Denny Doherty , Cass Elliot , Zal Yanovsky and James "Jim" Hendricks in New York's Greenwich Village . Even John Sebastian played intermittently with the group.

history

After the folk group The Big 3 , which consisted of Elliot, Doherty and Tim Rose and had grown in popularity in the New York area, broke up in 1963, Cass and Doherty formed the group Mugwumps with Yanovski and Hendricks in the same year. Also in 1963, the band members Elliot and Hendricks married. Mugwumps music can be characterized as folk- based pop music . A single released in early 1964 on Warner Brothers Records was unsuccessful. In August 1964, the material for an album was recorded, but it was not released because the group disbanded a short time later. The album was only released in 1967 against the background of the later successes of the Mugwumps members.

At the end of 1964, Elliot and Doherty joined forces with John Phillips and Michelle Gilliam to form The New Journeymen , which in 1965 was renamed The Mamas and the Papas .

James "Jim" Hendricks made a career as a songwriter and country singer. B. wrote the hit Summer Rain for Johnny Rivers and recorded over fifty albums of folk and country music.

The Mugwumps group only existed for a short time, but was the breeding ground for two successful bands: Sebastian and Yanovsky formed The Lovin 'Spoonful in 1965 , while Phillips, Elliot and Doherty achieved world success with Mamas & Papas .

The historical significance of the Mugwumps lies in the fact that traditional folk singers from the Greenwich Village tried to commercialize folk music through their approach to pop music and thus achieve a greater broad impact of folk music. With the two folk rock groups Lovin 'Spoonful and Mamas & Papas , which emerged from the Mugwumps , the path to popularization and commercialization of folk music was consistently followed.
