The Yamase is the Japanese name for cold winds which lead to violent ingress of cold air. It is the same phenomenon called Blizzard in North America and Buran in Siberia .

The Yamase comes into being in Japan because the north-south orientation of the Japanese islands allows the cold polar air to flow freely.
