Buran (wind)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Buran is a very strong storm that blows from the northeast, especially in the steppe and desert regions in northwest China's Xinjiang , on the lower Volga , in Kazakhstan and western Siberia .

There are two types:

  • The summer buran , a sandstorm , is stiflingly hot and carries large amounts of dust or sand with it. In the Lop Nor and Taklamakan deserts , it is also called Kara buran (= black buran ).
  • The winter buran , on the other hand, is icy cold and mainly swirls up snow and transports it with it.

The name of the space shuttle Buran is derived from the winter buran .

The snow / sand storm create compacted snow or sand dust on roads. A storm lasting several days often paralyzes traffic on the main roads and restricts the departure of vehicles outside of metropolitan areas. Dozens of people fall victim to storms every year.
