Rivers grew up in Baton Rouge and was influenced by the typical Louisiana music. His career is closely linked to Whiskey a Go Go , a nightclub in Los Angeles . There he played mainly the pieces of others, in particular by Chuck Berry .
His appearances were so successful that his first records were not studio recordings, but live recordings from Whiskey a Go-Go . His first single, Memphis , made it to number two in the American charts and number one in the German charts. His first album, also a live recording, brought him his first gold record . Other hits from this period were Secret Agent Man , Poor Side of Town , Summer Rain , Multiplication and Midnight Special .
He later founded his own record label, Soul City Records , and also wrote songs for other artists. In the 1970s he had success again with cover versions of Help Me Rhonda , Blue Suede Shoes , Rockin 'Pneumonia and Sea Cruise .
To this day, Johnny Rivers is active as a musician both in the studio and on tours.
