P&O Cruises is a brand of the British - American cruise company Carnival Corporation & plc for cruises in the English - speaking European market. The trademark is the lettering P&O, based on the origin of the former Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O). Six cruise ships are operated under the brand .
history
In addition to freight and crew, ships also carried paying passengers very early on. The Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company, founded in 1837, is considered the first company to include leisure-oriented journeys in its range. As early as 1844, sailing ships made excursions from Southampton to Gibraltar , Athens and Malta . A pure cruise company under the name P&O Cruises was not created until 1977 as part of a reorganization of the company.
In 2000, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company organized its cruise activities under various brands as P&O Princess Cruises plc. into an independent company. This was called Carnival plc in 2003. and since then forms the British part of the dual-listed company Carnival Corporation & plc. The traditional brand P&O Cruises is used by Carnival plc. Maintained with its own fleet. P&O Cruises is often referred to as the oldest cruise line in the world in advertising for the brand's cruise offers.
