P&O Cruises Australia (short: P&O Australia ) is a brand of the British - American cruise company Carnival Corporation & plc for the Australian market. The trademark is the lettering P&O, based on the former Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company . Since the 75th anniversary of the first P&O cruises in Australia, the ships have also been painted in their classic white. The British Carnival plc is the owner and operator of the ships used for the brand . The ships in the fleet therefore sail under the British flag with their home port in London. The most common ports of departure are Sydney , Brisbane and Auckland .

history

The roots of Australian cruise history actually lie less with P&O than with Sitmar Cruises (Società Italiana Trasporti Marittimi), which was founded by the Vlasov family of shipping companies in Italy . Their cargo ship Fairsky , which was converted for passengers, and the former troop transporter Fairstar , which were first used to cross numerous emigrants and later as cruise ships, made the Italian company well known. When Sitmar was taken over by P&O in 1988, the name of the Australian company was changed to P&O Sitmar Cruises Ltd. while in Europe the name Sitmar immediately disappeared. It was not until 1995 that Australia decided to change to P&O Holidays Ltd. and finally in 2001 to P&O Cruises Australia Ltd. In 2011 the company was dissolved. Today only the brand name still exists. The cruise operation is run as a branch of the British subgroup of Carnival Corporation & plc .

The former Fairsky , which was initially relocated to its subsidiary Princess Cruises as Sky Princess under P&O , returned to Australia in 2001 and was used for P&O Holidays under a new name as Pacific Sky until 2006. Then she was sold to Pullmantur Cruises. In 2004 the Pacific Sun came to P&O Australia, which had been built for Carnival Cruise Lines in 1986 and was replaced by a younger ship in the highly competitive American market.

The Pacific Star followed in 2005, until it was sold to Pullmantur Cruises in March 2008, where it was in service as Ocean Dream from May 2008 after renovation .

In October 2007, the Regal Princess came to P&O Australia as the oldest ship of Princess Cruises . After a month of renovation, she was put into service as Pacific Dawn . On October 30, 2008, Carnival Corporation & plc announced that it would be releasing the Ocean Village brand . The two Ocean Village ships were then also relocated to Australia and handed over to P&O Cruises Australia. The Ocean Village Two sailed as the Pacific Jewel from December 2009 , the Ocean Village followed at the end of 2010 as the Pacific Pearl .

The Pacific Dawn and Pacific Jewel are identical sister ships, which were formerly commissioned by Sitmar from the Fincantieri shipyard .

In November 2015, the ships Statendam and Ryndam previously used by Holland-America Line were integrated into the P&O Cruises Australia fleet as Pacific Eden and Pacific Aria . In June 2017 also pushed the Dawn Princess from Princess Cruises in the fleet of P & O Cruises Australia and was in Pacific Explorer renamed.

In the fall of 2018, the Pacific Jewel and Pacific Eden were sold. A new build with a tonnage of 135,500 GT for 4,200 passengers was originally to be commissioned by Fincantieri as a successor in 2019 . But then the decision was made to use the new building at Carnival Cruise Line . Alternatively, they wanted to move the Carnival Splendor to P&O Cruises Australia at the same time . In the meantime, however, there are plans to switch the Golden Princess from Princess Cruises to P&O Cruises Australia in 2020. It should be named Pacific Adventure . Her sister ship Star Princess is to follow to Australia a year later.
