Princess Cruises is a US cruise - shipping company that the Carnival Corporation & plc belongs to one of the largest travel companies in the world. The company is headquartered in Santa Clarita , California . The Princess Cruises logo symbolizes a sea ​​witch .

Golden Princess in the Caribbean

The company was founded in November 1965 when the businessman Stanley McDonald (1920-2014) from Seattle chartered the passenger ship Princess Patricia (also called Princess Pat ) from Canadian Pacific Limited and had cruises to Mexico carried out with it. After the ship had been returned to its owner, McDonald chartered the Princess Italia , one of the first ships that was built specifically for cruises, and offered trips through the Panama Canal , among other things . Princess Cruises was the first cruise operator to include regular canal passages in its cruise program. In 1968 the Princess Italia became the first ship of the shipping company to cross the Atlantic. Princess Cruises had now been sold to Boise Cascade Corporation, but was bought back by the company's founder in 1970.

In 1974 the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) took over the shipping company, which was now run as P&O Princess Cruises . The company's financial situation made it possible to take over more cruise ships. In the mid-1970s, P&O Princess Cruises made it possible for producer Aaron Spelling to use the ships Pacific Princess and Island Princess as a backdrop for the television series " Love Boat ", which made the shipping company known to an audience of millions. During this time, the saying "It's more than a cruise, it's the Love Boat" (Eng. It is more than a cruise, it is (the) "Love Boat" ) was created. The image and characters of the series continued to be used for promotional purposes. 1979 founder Stanley McDonald left the company.

In the early 1980s, Princess Cruises ships docked for the first time on the private island of Palm Island (Grenadines) , which was later replaced by the neighboring island of Mayreau . In 1984 P&O Princess Cruises took over the first newly built cruise ship, the Royal Princess . In the following year, the shipping company offered the first cruises in the Mediterranean and was the first of the large companies to station the Pacific Princess on the Pacific coast in San Diego . In 1987 the first cruises followed in Asian waters and in the Baltic Sea . In 1988 P&O Princes Cruises took over the shipping company SITMAR Cruises (Società Italiana Trasporti Marittimi) and thus became one of the largest among the American cruise lines. At the same time, cruises to New England and South America were added to the offer. In addition, P&O in the United States grouped cruises, hotels, rail and bus trips under the Princess logo.

In 1992 the “Princess Cays” ( Eleuthera / Bahamas ) became the shipping company's new private island. In 1998, the Grand Princess, at that time the largest cruise ship (109,000 GT) in the world, was put into service.

In 2000, Princess Cruises split off from the parent company P&O and the fleet was entered in the Bermuda Register. The following year was Santa Clarita ( California ) to the company headquarters. In 2003 it was taken over by Carnival Corporation & plc , and a year later began a close collaboration with the Cunard Line .

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic , Princess Cruises announced the temporary cessation of operations until May 2020.

Princess Tours

The subsidiary "Princess Tours" was founded in 1972 in Seattle . Initially, travel and accommodation were offered in Alaska , and since 1987 the company has also been operating its own railroad cars (“Midnight Sun Express”) for rail travel. Princess Tours now has five own guest houses (lodges).

New buildings

At the beginning of 2010, the parent company Carnival Corporation & plc and the Italian shipyard Fincantieri signed a letter of intent to build two new cruise ships, which were delivered in spring 2013 and spring 2014. Both ships are measured with 142,714 GT and offer space for around 3,600 passengers. The first new building is named Royal Princess ; this is the third time a ship owned by the shipping company has received this name. It entered service in June 2013.

The second ship bears the name Regal Princess , making it the second ship with this name in Princess Cruises history. The former Regal Princess (1991-2007) now sails as Pacific Dawn for P&O Cruises Australia . On July 30, 2014, the shipyard group Fincantieri and Princess Cruises announced the construction of a third Royal Class ship, the fourth Royal Class ship after the Britannia from P&O Cruises . It was named Majestic Princess . The keel was laid on July 10, 2015, the undocking on February 8, 2016. On March 30, 2017 the Majectic Princess was delivered. In October 2019, the Sky Princess was delivered as a further sister ship. Two more sister ships are to be delivered in 2020 and 2022.

In July 2018, two new buildings were ordered from Fincantieri with delivery in 2023 and 2025. They should be measured with 175,000 GT and be powered with LNG . At the end of March 2019, two further newbuildings were ordered for which options previously existed.

Repeated illegal garbage disposal

In 2002, parent company Carnival Corporation pleaded guilty to forging records of the disposal of oily bilge water from 1996 to 2001. This was accompanied by a fine of $ 18 million. The company was also committed to charitable work and placed under judicial observation for a period of 5 years.

For repeated illegal dumping of oily waste into the sea and for attempted concealment of the violations, Princess Cruises Ltd was sentenced in 2016 to the highest penalty to date for deliberate pollution by ships, at a value of 40 million USD. The authorities assume that illegal waste disposal has been a common practice since 2005. Likewise, ships of Princess Cruises Ltd and Carnival Cruise Lines Inc were again placed under judicial observation.

For violations of conditions from the 2016 ruling, Carnival Corporation & plc. and its subsidiary Princess Cruises Ltd were again fined $ 20 million in 2019. The violations were again the illegal disposal of waste, falsification of records and attempts to circumvent judicial supervision by using cleaning teams to forestall inspections.

The Princess Cruises fleet currently includes 17 cruise ships that carry more than 1.3 million passengers annually. In 2011 the Princess Cruises fleet had a capacity of 36,900 passengers. The ships call at more than 350 ports on all continents. The language on board is English. Service and equipment are adapted to the US public.

The "Explorer" class was created when Princess Cruises took over three smaller R- class cruise ships after Renaissance Cruises went bankrupt .
