The Artania (formerly Artemis , Royal Princess ) is a cruise ship that has been in use for the German tour operator Phoenix Reisen from Bonn since May 2011 . The Artania is one of the few cruise ships without interior cabins for passengers.

history

The ship was built between 1983 and 1984 at the Wärtsilä shipyard in Helsinki and was launched on February 18, 1984 as the Royal Princess for Princess Cruises . After the surrender on October 30, 1984, she was baptized on November 15, 1984 by Princess Diana in Southampton . In 2005, the British shipping company P&O Cruises took over the ship and, after renovation and modernization work at the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven , put it into service as the Artemis . At the end of April 2011, the Artemis was sold to the new owner Artania GmbH, a subsidiary of V.Ships , and modernized and overhauled in a four-week conversion phase, which in turn took place at the Lloyd shipyard . On May 28, 2011, the ship was christened Artania in the Hamburg Cruise Center and was chartered for Phoenix Reisen. Godmother was Maggy Pfingsten-Brohm, a long-time employee of the tour operator.

At the end of September 2014, the Artania was docked at the Lloyd shipyard in Bremerhaven in order to be extensively modernized and renovated by December 9, 2014. The main focus of the work was the renewal of the machinery. In addition, the entire fresh water system was renewed, renovation work was carried out in restaurants and other public areas, sanitary facilities were replaced, 10,621 m² of carpets were replaced and 2,448 energy-saving lights were installed and the 156 cabins on decks 6 and 7 were equipped with balconies . The ship started sailing again in mid-December 2014.

Originally the Artania with her home port in Hamilton sailed the Bermuda flag . On October 26, 2016, the flag was changed during a stay in the port of Praia and since then - like the rest of the Phoenix fleet - has been flying the flag of the Bahamas .

In 2020, several people on board fell ill with COVID-19 , after which the ship was quarantined for two weeks in Fremantle . 23 guests and 13 crew members were brought to local hospitals, one guest and one crew member died as a result of the infection. In mid-April, the ship was able to leave Fremantle and set out for Germany. Most of the passengers left the ship, but eight remained on board for Germany, where the ship docked on June 8, 2020. The Artania was the last still active cruise ship worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic .

Machine system and drive

Original equipment

Artania's diesel-mechanical machinery originally consisted of four six-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engines of the SEMT Pielstick type PC4-2, which Wärtsilä built under license. They acted in pairs on the two variable pitch propellers via the gearbox and shaft system . Each engine weighed 153 tons and had a displacement of 950 liters. The power was 5,800 kW at a speed of 400 rpm. In addition, the ship has two auxiliary diesel engines of the type Wärtsilä 6R22 with a total output of 5,960 kW, a pair of stabilizers and two bow thrusters .

Machine system after renovation in 2014

As part of a dry dock stay at Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven, the Pielstick engines were replaced by four new 12-cylinder diesel engines of the Wärtsilä 32 series in October 2014. The displacement of the new engines is 386 liters, the cylinder output is given as 580 kW, which corresponds to a total output of 6,960 kW per engine. In order to adapt their nominal speed of 750 rpm to the shaft system and propeller, four new intermediate gears were also required between the existing gears and the new main motors. In addition, the ship received a new 8-cylinder auxiliary diesel of the same series and new silencers.

Literature, media

  • The Bayerische Rundfunk shot with a film crew of Turbulent Times film production on the Artania the consequences 81 (Season 4) to 329 (Season 8) of the TV documentary series Mad About Sea for ARD . In the series, however, the ship is not referred to by its actual name, but always as the Grand Lady . For episode 330 (season 8), the film crew returned to Albatros , with which the documentary started in the first three seasons in 2009.
