The Deutschland , since 2015 World Odyssey from September to April , is a cruise ship that was operated by MS "Deutschland" Beteiligungsgesellschaft after the bankruptcy of the Peter Deilmann shipping company . In March 2015, the ship was sold to a US company in another bankruptcy proceeding. Until it was sold, the Deutschland was the only ocean cruise ship that sailed under the German flag . Home port was Neustadt in Holstein .

The Deutschland was classified by Germanischer Lloyd with " 100 A5 E1 with freeboard 2.3 m" and ice class E1. The ship became known as the dream ship in the television series of the same name , for which it was used from 1999. From 2006, Germany was also the filming location for the dream ship offshoot Kreuzfahrt ins Glück . In 2015 it was replaced by Amadea as the location for both series .

history

Construction and delivery

Designed for worldwide cruising ship was on December 1, 1996 in the German Howaldtswerke- Werft AG (HDW) in Kiel with the hull number 328 to set keel . On January 16, 1998, the ship floated for the first time. The handover to the shipping company took place on May 11, 1998 after the former Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker had carried out the christening . On May 16, 1998, Germany set sail for her maiden cruise in the direction of Norway .

In the summer months the ship sailed from a German base port (e.g. Kiel , Lübeck , Travemünde or Hamburg ) to the Norwegian fjords and the Baltic Sea . While it usually spent spring and autumn in the Mediterranean and headed for the Canary Islands , destinations such as Asia , South Africa and the Caribbean were mostly offered in the European winter . In addition, Germany was three times on a world tour.

In 2000 the ship was on the way as an ambassador for the Expo 2000 in Hanover . As part of the Summer Olympics in Sydney that same year , it was a guest ship of the National Olympic Committee of Germany, as well as in 2004 at the Summer Olympics in Athens , where the ship was moored in Piraeus .

In 2008 the Deutschland celebrated its tenth birthday as part of an anniversary cruise.

At the Olympic Summer Games in London in 2012 , the Deutschland was nicknamed the “German Ship London 2012” and served as a floating hotel and guest ship during her stay in London. The German athletes then had the opportunity to travel with the Deutschland from London to Hamburg .

Dispute about flagging out

The Deutschland was the only cruise ship still sailing under the German flag. In May 2012, the Deilmann shipping company announced that it would in future be able to sail the ship under the Maltese flag for cost reasons . The announcement led to public protests, including by Captain Andreas Jungblut . As part of the Summer Olympics , the Deutschland was moored as a German ship in London when the debate about flagging out met with wide media coverage. The shipping company Peter Deilmann announced on July 30, 2012 that it would forego flagging out and continue to run Germany under the German flag and in the Neustadt in Holstein shipping register.

On October 29, 2014, the owner company of the ship, MS 'Deutschland' Beteiligungs GmbH , filed for insolvency proceedings. Since the creditors' meeting on November 12, 2014, a sale of Germany became apparent. On the same day, the Germany also ended her last cruise for the time being in Lisbon . Since the potential buyer had until November 27, 2014 not provided sufficient funding evidence which could for the relegation required dockyard time not be commissioned. Two short trips and a planned trip around the world were canceled. The insolvency proceedings against the shipping company and the operating company were opened at the Eutin District Court . On January 20, 2015 it was announced that the insolvency administrator had canceled all trips that had already been planned. The crew was released. Trips that had already been paid for were covered by insurance.

Sale and further use since 2015

On March 24, 2015, the bankruptcy administrator announced that the ship had been sold to a US company. During the sales negotiations, Germany was in front of Gibraltar . On May 19, 2015, the ship was handed over and changed to the flag of convenience of the Bahamas .

In the summer of 2015, the ship was used by the Plantours cruise line for almost two months because Hamburg , which was sailing for Plantours, was out of action for several weeks after having hit the ground. Due to the great demand, Plantours extended the charter contract by 13 days. The ship was then rebuilt at the Lindenau shipyard in Kiel .

At the end of August 2015, the ship was renamed World Odyssey . Since autumn 2015, the US organizer Semester at Sea has been traveling with up to 600 students in the winter semester . The charter runs until at least 2027.

Since 2016, the ship has been sailing under the name Deutschland for Phoenix Reisen from May to September . At the end of 2015, Phoenix Reisen initially agreed a charter for five years. In the spring of 2016, the World Odyssey was converted at the Navantia shipyard in Cádiz and the outside cabins were installed on decks 7 and 8 with French balconies. Delos Cruise bought the ship in January 2018. The charter with Phoenix Reisen was extended until 2025.

Incidents

While the Germany was lying in the Norwegian port of Eidfjord on May 23, 2010 , a fire broke out in the engine room at around 12.30 p.m. for unknown reasons. At that time there were 607 people on board, 364 of them passengers. All passengers and most of the crew as well as two Norwegian pilots were disembarked unharmed, only a small part of the crew remained on board. According to the fire brigade, the fire was finally extinguished towards evening. The 364 passengers started their journey home on May 24, 2010 by bus, ferry or plane via Oslo. After the damage was recorded in the port of Hanøytangen (north of Bergen ), the Deutschland was taken to the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg with the tug Bugsier 3 , where it was docked for repairs. In addition to the repair work, other work was carried out on the ship, which remained in the shipyard for 30 days. The fire damage of around two million euros was paid for by the insurance company. After three canceled trips, Germany resumed its cruise program from Hamburg on July 3, 2010.

On January 15, 2012, the Germany had a grounding in the Beagle Channel . Nobody was injured and the ship was able to continue its voyage after an investigation. The Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation investigated the marine casualty and published a report.

Machine system and drive

Engine room

The Germany has a conventional diesel-mechanical drive . An eight-cylinder in-line diesel engine of the MaK  8M32 type and a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine of the MaK 6M32 type are combined to form a drive group ("father" and "son") on the port and starboard sides . The nominal speed of the motors is 600 / min. They drive one of the two variable-pitch propellers with a constant speed of 164 rpm via a reduction gear ("twin motor gear") and shaft line . The ship's main generators (shaft generators) are driven via an additional power output on each of the two main gears. Each generator has an output of 3,000 kVA.

Two additional generators from AEM Dessau , which are driven by MaK 9M20 diesel engines, are available exclusively to supply the ship with electricity . They generate an output of 1,800 kVA each. The emergency generator has an output of 325 kVA.

As early as May 1999, the ship's side had to be cut open at HDW in Rendsburg in order to replace the heavily loaded gearboxes with new builds from Renk . In addition to minor damage, the noise development in particular was no longer acceptable to the shipping company, as this meant that 40 cabins could no longer be occupied.

Cabins and on-board facilities

The furnishing of the Deutschland is based on the style of the grand hotels of the twenties. Style elements of Classicism , Art Nouveau and Art Deco can be found in the cabins and public areas . The ship was awarded the highest rating “5-star superior” by the DEHOGA committee for hotel classification . According to a ruling by the Berlin Regional Court, this award is not permitted for these ships and has not been used since 2012. The Deutschland was originally intended for 620 passengers in 318 cabins. After renovations, it offers space for 520 passengers in 293 cabins, which are divided into five categories ("Grande Suite", "Suite", "Classic", "Comfort" and "Cabinet"). One cabin on board is designed to be handicapped accessible .

In addition to the "Kaisersaal", where concerts , balls and similar events take place, the publicly accessible on-board facilities include:
