In 2009, Schweiger took on one of the leading roles in the comedy Male Hearts by Simon Verhoeven . On November 24th, 2009 his film Zweiohrküken  - the sequel to Keinohrhasen  - premiered in Berlin. Here he again directed, produced the film and starred alongside his youngest daughter Emma . The film reached 4.3 million viewers in German cinemas. As a director he often works with the cameraman Christof Wahl . In June 2009 RTL ran the casting show Mission Hollywood , in which Schweiger was asked to select one of twelve young actresses for a role in a Hollywood film. Due to bad ratings, the show was moved from prime time on Monday evening to Saturday afternoon.

On December 3, 2011, Schweiger gave during the last broadcast of Wetten, dass ..? Moderated by Thomas Gottschalk . known that he will be seen in the future at the Hamburg Tatort . At the Jupiter Awards 2012, Til Schweiger responded to the question of whether he wanted to change anything at the scene of the crime that he didn't like the opening credits and described them as "outdated" and "somehow stupid". His statement was heavily discussed in the media and criticized by Tatort colleagues, which in turn annoyed Schweiger. There were also positive voices from the media industry and brand consultants. He portrays the inspector Nick Tschiller . His first case, Willkommen in Hamburg , reached the highest number of viewers in a crime scene episode in almost 20 years. His role as crime scene inspector was parodied by radio station SWR3 in the comedy series Tatort with Til .

From January to April 2012, Schweiger shot the film Guardian Angel , an emotional action drama with him and his eldest daughter Luna in the leading roles. In doing so, he changed the genre in Germany and again directed, was involved in the script and produced the film, which was released in German cinemas on September 27, 2012. Head Full of Honey , an English-language remake of his own hit film Honey in the Head , was released in selected cinemas in the USA on November 30, 2018. The film failed critics and audiences and was removed from US theaters after six days. Schweiger also described the unsuccessful cinema release in an interview as his biggest career flop to date.

Private

From 1995 to 2014 Til Schweiger was married to Dana Carlsen , with whom he has four children: Valentin (* 1995), who works as a cameraman , and the actresses Luna (* 1997), Lilli (* 1998) and Emma (* 2002) . The family lived in Point Dume, near Malibu, in the United States from 1997 to 2004 ; they then moved to Hamburg-Niendorf . The couple has been separated since 2005.

Social Commitment

Child poverty

Schweiger campaigns against child poverty in Germany. It is a "scandal" that over two million children live in poverty. Schweiger supports the encouragement project of the Stern und der Arche foundation .

Til Schweiger Foundation

On August 21, 2015, Schweiger founded the “Til Schweiger Foundation” in Hamburg. The purpose of the foundation is to improve the chances of disadvantaged children and young people of all origins and their participation in education and social integration. The foundation is supported by an advisory board that includes Sigmar Gabriel and Joachim Löw , for example .

equality

Schweiger spoke out in favor of opening up marriage to same-sex couples in Germany. In June 2015, he and 150 other prominent Germans signed the open letter " #EsIstZeit ".

Controversy

Press screening

Since his film Keinohrhasen (2007) there have been no more regular press screenings for Schweiger's new films. Instead, Schweiger only shows his directorial work to a hand-picked group of journalists.

German Film Academy

Schweiger was one of the founding members of the German Film Academy in 2003 . In 2008, however, he resigned angrily because the Academy had not included his box-office hit Keinohrhasen in the preselection for the German Film Prize . Schweiger felt it was "scandalous" that the most successful German film of the year with over three million viewers was not considered, while instead many films that "didn't know a pig" ended up in the shortlist. The academy rejected the charge, however; in the case of no-ear rabbits, the reporting regulations were simply not complied with.

Reporting obligation for sex offenders

In 2011, Schweiger called for "mandatory reporting for sex offenders" on the Markus Lanz talk show . He said that in the US you can look up the Internet to see if a sex offender lives in your neighborhood; he does not know what should be reprehensible about it. He explained that this is not permissible in Germany with the “German do- gooder ” and its respect for human dignity. He is also of the opinion that someone who commits a sexual offense has forfeited his right in this society. However, this statement is not a plea for the death penalty, he is a strict opponent of this procedure.

Colored Bag / Afghanistan War

In March 2013, the Hamburg villa that Schweiger had just moved into was pelted with white paint bags and his partner's car was set on fire. According to a presumed letter of confession from "crime scene polluters", it was an action that criticized Schweiger's attitude to the war in Afghanistan and his film Guardian Angel , the preview of which he presented personally and with media coverage for troop support in Afghanistan at the Bundeswehr Camp Marmal . At the time of the action, Schweiger and his girlfriend were in Mallorca , while his two oldest children Luna and Valentin were in the house.

refugees

Schweiger campaigned for refugees in the course of the refugee crisis in Germany from 2015 and appeared on television as a guest on this topic. His suggestion caused a sensation that protesters who demonstrate against refugee homes should be put in prison for one night, where they could think about what they were actually doing. In his opinion, freedom of assembly does not apply to such demonstrators, "the constitution [...] should be changed a little". The refugee home that he had announced as model accommodation could not be realized.

SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , Schweiger made several statements about containment measures . In March 2020, Schweiger complained that many people would not keep the minimum distance in public spaces. They apparently do not take the risk seriously. Schweiger received encouragement from other actors for his concern. At the end of April 2020, Schweiger referred in an Instagram post to the video of an ENT doctor who assessed COVID-19 as a mild cold, and in further posts criticized the mask requirement implemented in Germany and the RKI's justification for the measures to reduce mortality Limit COVID-19. Schweiger also promoted the KenFM channel . Numerous followers accused Schweiger of spreading conspiracy theories . In May 2020 Schweiger presented on his Instagram account a caricature of the head of the Robert Koch Institute Lothar Wieler as a lottery fairy in front of a lottery drum, who says on this drawing: “Welcome to the drawing of the infection numbers!” He was criticized by followers for this. The death threats received in connection with the controversy of the Bild newspaper, which published a dubious article about Christian Drosten , both by him and by Karl Lauterbach , who also advocates a cautious approach to the demand for the easing of measures to contain the pandemic , Schweiger commented with the words: "Don't cry around now - I didn't either. Stand by your opinion - it is your right, but don't cry. The future will show whether you are right. ”He makes reference to death threats against himself when he spoke out to soldiers in Afghanistan and later in favor of accepting war refugees.

Reviews

  • Regardless of their commercial success, Schweiger's films usually don't get good reviews. Schweiger himself stated that "[a] ll films [he] made himself were written down in the features [...]", which is why he only shows his films to a handpicked selection of journalists before they start.
  • The Frankfurter Rundschau sees Schweiger as a “phenomenon” and one of the “most influential German film stars”, whose works, however, “pulverize” film critics year after year.
  • Gala thinks that Schweiger belongs to the "first ranks of the national drama guild", but is often accused of having a "tendency to shallow".
  • As part of a film review of Inglourious Basterds, Sonja M. Schultz noted on critic.de: "[...] Even Til Schweiger, as Nazi avenger Hugo Stiglitz, is allowed to speak a catchy sentence:" Say goodbye to your eggs! " Tarantino has a feel for everyone's potential. "
