Investigating Sex is an American - German comedy film from 2001. Directed by Alan Rudolph , who also wrote the screenplay with Michael Henry Wilson based on the book Recherches Sur la sexualite archives du surealisme by José Pierre and co-produced the film. The leading roles were played by Neve Campbell , Til Schweiger and Nick Nolte .

The action takes place in New England in the 1930s. A group of people, mostly artists, are invited by the entrepreneur Faldo and his wife Sasha. They openly discuss sex; Zoe and Alice write down the conversation. Topics such as masturbation and group sex are addressed among others.

The film was shot in Berlin . Its production cost was estimated to be eight million US dollars . On June 17, 2001, the film was shown at the Seattle Film Festival, which was followed by a screening at the Helsinki International Film Festival on September 21, 2002. In Spain there were around 18,000 cinema viewers. In Germany, the film was released directly on DVD in December 2006.

Ken Eisner wrote in the trade journal Variety that the attempt to restore the libertine atmosphere in the circles of the European bohemian of the 1920s was only partially convincing, despite the good cast. The offered "chatter" is "tiresome"; the film contains linguistic anachronisms. Dermot Mulroney captivates in his role, and Neve Campbell, the music and the lighting were praised.
