Immediately after graduating from high school in Wattenscheid, she started supporting her father Klaus Steilmann in the textile company Klaus Steilmann GmbH & Co. KG . When a position became available at a subsidiary in Montreal, Canada , she jumped in spontaneously. She broke off her education at the Community College Fashion Institute of Technology at the State University of New York . In 1992 she founded her own fashion label . At the age of 27, she received the “Eco Manager of the Year” award for designing the first eco collection. In 1994 she was also the “personal advisor for ecological innovation” to the then SPD candidate for chancellor Rudolf Scharping and in 1996 manager of Til Schweiger . In 1997 she was appointed to the management of Steilmann-Verwaltungs-GmbH & Co. KG together with her sister Ute Steilmann . Until 1999, Britta Steilmann was the manager responsible for exports, managing the foreign companies and looking after major customers. Due to unsuccessfulness and in a dispute with her father, she left this post. Then she worked as a management consultant. Between 2001 and 2003 she returned and became chairwoman of the management of the Steilmann Group. Under her leadership, the company underwent a restructuring process that was accompanied by the loss of around 1200 jobs. In 2003 the Steilmann Group ran into economic difficulties again when annual sales fell by 9% to 507 million euros. These were overcome with the dismissal of a further 750 employees and the entry of the Italian Miro Radici Group, Bergkamen , which took over about half of the company shares. In the same year Britta again handed over the chairmanship of the management to Ute Steilmann. Manager magazine reported an argument between the sisters, which they denied.
