action

Five very different types of men train in the Fitnessworld sports studio in Berlin.

Music producer Jerome, who, contrary to his personal taste in music, is supposed to produce the pop star Bruce Berger, works his way from one brief affair to the next. Jerome could become a rich man if he would make Bruce keep producing his songs for him. After an argument with Bruce, Bruce is no longer willing to have Jerome produce. Jerome apologizes to the sentimental Bruce with a handwritten letter. Bruce forgives him and moves in with Jerome.

The chaotic Phillipp learns that his girlfriend Nina is pregnant. Phillipp is a dreamer, has no permanent job and a business plan for a fast-food restaurant specializing in organic burgers that nobody wants to read. So he gets his friend Niklas to vouch for him at the bank in order to take out a loan. With the money he creates the dream business location Life . However, when Günther, the official of the trade inspectorate, enters the restaurant and does not want to give him the necessary business license, Phillipp's life seems to finally go down the drain.

Niklas, a successful advertising man, plans to marry his girlfriend Laura, but panics and cheats on his girlfriend with aerobics trainer and film starlet Maria. Laura gets behind it and throws Niklas out. Niklas, who has planned his whole life, suddenly doesn't know what to do next and gets drunk at a party from Jerome.

Subway driver Roland was left by his wife Susanne. His father lives in a retirement home and visits him every day. Roland convinces the nurse in the nursing home to allow his father to bake cookies again. After an accident with personal injury, Roland is easily angry and prone to violence.

The civil servant Günther has not yet found the woman for life, gets to know Roland's still-wife and falls in love with her. The two often go to the zoo. At first Susanne fights against a budding relationship because she knows that Roland could find out about it and kill Günther. Roland actually spies on his wife, and when he discovers her together at the zoo, he throws Günther into the crocodile pool. Günther survived the "accident" with a few bite wounds. Roland is then arrested.

Günther, who now has a relationship with Roland's wife, is in such a good mood that he now wants to give Phillipp the (extraordinary) business license for his restaurant. Phillipp confesses his love for Nina. Niklas would like to go on his planned honeymoon alone with the backpack and say goodbye to Laura beforehand. In the end she decides to come along and forgives him for his infidelity. Roland, who is serving his sentence in prison, receives a letter and a tin of biscuits. The nurse from the old people's home wants him to be a pen friend. Jerome confesses to Bruce that he is not into Bruce's sappy music. He also says that there was only one woman for him he has ever loved - Melanie in his home village of Heuchelheim . Bruce encourages Jerome to go to see her after over 20 years.

background

Emergence

Verhoeven worked for six years on the screenplay for Männerherzen , which was created in parallel to a series of unrealized projects after his first directorial work 100 Pro in 2001. The script "about the role of man in all its diversity" was inspired by Verhoeven's own experiences and considerations as well as by the experiences of his circle of friends. He based the different male characters on the idea of having each figure embody a fragment of the overall male symbol. Verhoeven said he had set himself the goal of sketching men “realistically with all their contradictions and uncertainties” while writing - far removed from the stereotypes that are usually defined in romantic comedies from the start.

Verhoeven created the main characters with certain actors in mind during the writing process. The development of Günther's role was significantly influenced by Christian Ulmen. Verhoeven had the idea of pop singer Bruce Berger again after he had performed a hit parody at a wedding (“Song for Sascha”) to the amusement of his friends. The director described the film as a "male alternative" to the US series Sex and the City and similar fictional material that was primarily about women and their love lives. Verhoeven justified his decision to move the plot of the film to Berlin by stating that men's hearts are a “big city love film”. He also replied that in Berlin you can “wonderfully mix people from different social levels and cultural backgrounds” without ever appearing inauthentic.

production

The shooting of men's hearts took place from August 1 to September 30, 2008 in Berlin and the surrounding area. The shooting locations included Alexanderplatz , Gendarmenmarkt , the sports field of SV Blau Weiß Berolina in Berlin-Mitte and a shop in Kernhofer Strasse in the Rummelsburg district . The film was produced by the Munich-based Wiedemann & Berg Filmproduktion , whose co-founders Max Wiedemann and Quirin Berg had accompanied Verhoeven's work on the script in advance. The German Film Fund supported the project with 600,000 euros. The Filmförderungsanstalt contributed 350,000 euros to the production and distribution funding, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg just under 500,000 euros.

According to Simon Verhoeven, the financing of the film was simplified considerably after the two main actors, Ulmen and Schweiger, had agreed. Christian Ulmen , who had already stood in front of the camera with Verhoeven in Doris Dörries Der Fischer und seine Frau (2005), was offered the role of Günther while the script was being developed. Til Schweiger , whose participation Verhoeven had originally not assumed due to his large number of his own film projects, had already given the director his approval "two hours" after receiving the script. Also Wotan Wilke Mohring had been offered the role of Roland already during the formation. The cast of the remaining male main cast emerged from the ongoing casting process prior to production. Florian David Fitz , who played with Verhoeven in Girls, Girls 2 - Loft or Love (2004), was invited to auditions seven times before Verhoeven was able to convince those responsible for Warner to cast him in the role of Niklas. Maxim Mehmet was the last leading actor to join the production.

Fahri Ogün Yardım can also be seen as Jerome's co-producer Loco. Elyas M'Barek appears as the brother of Jerome's ex-affair. Beate Maes appears as Ms. Koschinsky, a realtor who wants to sell Niklas and Laura their first house together. The Germany's Next Top Model -Finalistinnen Yvonne Schroeder , Hana Nitsche and Anne-Kathrin Wendler are seen in the film as a dancer or affairs Jerome while Sandra Ahrabian a guest role as host of a call-in game show has. Nika von Altenstadt , Schweiger's childhood sweetheart, can be seen in the film as Jerome's childhood sweetheart Melanie. Schweiger's daughter Emma Schweiger appears in the film as her daughter Emily. The director Dennis Gansel , known among other things for the film Die Welle , appears in a cameo as the ex-boyfriend of Jana Pallaske , whom Philip gets involved in an argument. Verhoeven himself also appears in a cameo as the actor in the fictional soap opera stewardesses . His younger brother Luca appears in the film as a community service provider. Antoine Monot Jr. and Bastian Pastewka have also made guest appearances .

The soundtrack to men's hearts was produced by Verhoeven himself and was released on October 9, 2009 by Universal Music . Verhoeven contributed specially written songs that he recorded together with Rufus Martin as the singer of the band Marshmellow Club. In addition to Wolfgang Hammerschmid, he was responsible for the composition of the orchestral film music , in which over twenty musicians were involved. Verhoeven also wrote and produced the two satirical hits “All children of this earth” and “Tell me why”, which were interpreted in the film by Justus von Dohnányi alias Bruce Berger.

The movie's theme song - "Wonderful" - was written by Gary Go in 2009 and reached the top 40 on the British, German and Austrian music charts. The associated music video was shot on the roof of a residential building in Berlin prior to publication. Go also contributed the song “Berlin”, a reinterpretation of his album title “Brooklyn”, which he had produced especially for men’s hearts . Singer James Morrison produced the song "Watch and Wait" exclusively for the film's soundtrack.

Reviews

Men’s Hearts is a cheeky comedy that is full of intelligent approaches, lively dialogues and situation comedy,” said the Frankfurter Rundschau in its review of October 7, 2009. “In the snappy episode film, director Simon Verhoeven takes a wink of the contemporary male world. None of this seems new at all and suggests that Verhoeven primarily wants to show stereotypical characters in his film and pull well-known male clichés through the cocoa. But far from it! [...] With "Männerherzen", Verhoeven has succeeded in creating a comedy that latently reminds of Indeed ... love and yet carries its own personal note. "

Cinema.de described the film as “charming gender fun that, despite a few clichés, maintains the balance between gossip and tragedy.” Verhoeven didn’t play a joke “despite the bizarre characters in its smug and light and airy fun. Even in the most grotesque situations, like Günther's fight with a zoo crocodile, he manages to show the characters as insecure types who stand in their own way. "

“With the star-studded comedy Men Hearts , director Simon Verhoeven is now taking a step back. Instead of deciphering the jumble of the sexes, he is satisfied with first of all trying to find out about the species “man”. The insights into the male soul world are for the most part not new - but thanks to the excellently presented actors, the grief over the lack of aha-effect is very limited ”, wrote Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts . "At least the second directorial work by Simon Verhoeven offers good entertainment and a playful cast who comforts over a few tonal disturbances."
