Der Fischer und seine Frau is a film by the German director and author Doris Dörrie from 2005, to which she was inspired by Vom Fischer und seine Frau , a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm .

The veterinarian Otto, who specializes in fish, meets the fashion designer Ida in Japan. You are getting married there. For the wedding they are given a Japanese lucky charm, a cat, namely a Maneki Neko , which is supposed to bring them luck and prosperity.
Back in Germany, both live in Otto's caravan. However, Ida soon becomes pregnant, which is why the couple move into an apartment. They struggle to make ends meet. While Otto presents himself as a relaxed bon vivant, househusband and father for whom a simple life is enough to be happy, Ida wants to earn money with her fashion in Koi design and dreams of a better life. She works day and night and after the initial successes the family can move to a larger, more modern apartment. The success of Ida's creations continues. She travels to Japan on business, while Otto stays at home with the child. The alienation of the couple becomes more and more evident, and after Ida can afford a luxury villa - with a huge Maneki Neko in front of it - the relationship seems to have come to an end. Otto moves back to his mother and Ida to her family.
In the end the two find each other again and move into the old caravan.
