Simon Vincent Verhoeven (born June 20, 1972 in Munich ) is a German director , screenwriter , film producer , actor and film composer .

Life

Simon Verhoeven comes from a theater and film family: he is the son of the actress Senta Berger and the director and doctor Michael Verhoeven , the brother of Luca , the nephew of the actress Lis Verhoeven and the grandson of Paul Verhoeven , former director and director of the German Theaters in Berlin and the Münchner Kammerspiele .

Up to the age of 17, Simon Verhoeven played as a striker for TSV 1860 Munich in the highest German youth class and the DFB selection football. Due to a serious injury from an opponent, he had to end his football career. His knowledge of football helped him in 2003 to play the role of Ottmar Walter in Sönke Wortmann's hit movie Das Wunder von Bern .

In 1991 he graduated from high school in Munich and six months later began an acting training in New York City at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute . During his time in New York, he also studied jazz composition with the famous jazz pianist Don Friedman and temporarily moved to Boston for a summer semester to study film music at Berklee College of Music . In 1995 Verhoeven was admitted to the Tisch School of Arts at New York University , where he studied film directing . He completed his studies in 1999 as a Bachelor of Fine Arts .

Career

In 2000 Verhoeven wrote and directed his first feature film, 100 Pro , which was nominated for the German Film Award. As an actor, he has worked with directors such as Sönke Wortmann , Doris Dörrie , the Oscar- nominated Bruce Beresford and Roland Suso Richter : In 2008 Richter shot the film Mogadishu about the plane hijacking of Landshut in 1977 with Verhoeven as Jürgen Vietor , which won the German TV Prize in 2009 was awarded as the best television film of the year.

With over half a million viewers, the film rose to number 1 in the box office on the first weekend. The shooting of Verhoeven's new film Nightlife began in May 2019 in Berlin. The main roles were played by Elyas M'Barek , Frederick Lau and Palina Rojinski . The comedy about a first date that turns into a turbulent chase through Berlin's nightlife started on February 14, 2020 at number 1 in the German cinema charts with 355,000 viewers on the first weekend. After 3 weeks and as the first German film in 2020 with over 1 million visitors, the theatrical exploitation ended abruptly when all cinemas in Germany were closed for the time being due to the corona crisis . At the Romy Awards 2020 , the film received the award for best screenplay (cinema).

Simon Verhoeven is now developing and co-producing his works with Sentana Filmproduktion, which Michael Verhoeven and Senta Berger founded in 1965.
