Jürgen Vietor

Jürgen Vietor (* 1942 in Kassel ) is a German pilot . In 1977 he gained fame as a copilot through the hijacking of the "Landshut" plane .

Life

Jürgen Vietor became a naval aviator after completing his officer training at the Mürwik Naval School ( Gorch Fock 1964-1965) and from 1967 to 1974 mainly flew Breguet Atlantic in Naval Aviation Wing 3 "Graf Zeppelin" at Nordholz Air Base . After that, Vietor worked as a pilot for Lufthansa for 25 years . He has been retired since 1999.

Because the kidnappers of Landshut Vietor for Jews thought that they would shoot him. The logo of his Junghans watch reminded her of the Star of David . Vietor had to kneel on the ground, but flight captain Jürgen Schumann prevented him from being shot. After Schumann's murder, Vietor had to fly the Boeing 737-200 alone.

He resumed flight service six weeks after the abduction. The first plane he flew after the hijacking was again the Landshut . In protest against the announced release from prison of the RAF terrorist Christian Klar , Jürgen Vietor returned his Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in November 2008 . It was awarded to him in October 1977 by Federal President Walter Scheel .
