After catching her fiancé Peter cheating a week before her wedding, a world collapses for Gretchen Haase.

She returns to Berlin in her parents' house. Her father, Prof. Franz Haase, made her the offer to apply for an assistant doctor position in surgery in his hospital . She accepts the offer. In the hospital she meets Dr. Marc Meier, the senior surgeon in charge. Marc Meier is her old childhood sweetheart and the curse of her childhood in one person. He didn’t miss a minute during her school days to make life difficult for her, and yet Gretchen was hopelessly in love with him by the time she finished school. Even when they meet again, he promptly makes fun of their greatest weak point, their alleged excess weight.

When she then learns from her father that he would be her boss if she accepted the assistant position, her plan is shaken for the first time, because Gretchen does not want to deal with Marc Meier under any circumstances. Ultimately, however, she decides to take up the position, which is not least due to the encouragement from Dr. Mehdi Kaan lies. Dr. In contrast to Marc, Kaan, the senior gynecologist in charge , is very sensitive. This tempts Gretchen to invite him to have a coffee on her first day at work, which he categorically refuses.

Sister Gabi, who is having an affair with Marc, which she would like to turn into a relationship, tries to mark out her territory. But that doesn't help her much, because Gretchen and Marc, who is always very sarcastic and macho towards her, get closer. Eventually there is a kiss. While the senior doctor only wants a casual affair, Gretchen is not the type and finally has to confess that she cannot and does not want to separate sex and love. So the relationship between the two seems to have broken down before anything has happened. Shortly afterwards, Gretchen caught Marc and Gabi in an unambiguous situation that was staged by Gabi and is suddenly happy that she didn't do anything with Marc, because in their eyes he will forever remain an incapable macho.

Up until then, Gretchen had tried to ignore any signs that Dr. Kaan might have feelings for her. But suddenly something develops between the two and she seems to have forgotten Marc. The fact that he has a daughter and his wife is in a coma is initially difficult for Gretchen, but she accepts it.

While Gretchen is more or less happy with Mehdi, Gabi sees all the skins floating away in the relationship with Marc. And so she tries to tie him to her with a baby. Dr. However, Meier makes it clear to her that he doesn't want a child with her. They agree to abort the child . On the drive to the abortion clinic, the two argue and it becomes clear that Gabi is not as sure about an abortion as Marc. They don't pay attention to the road and Marc hits a cyclist. You take the man to the clinic and he has an operation, his chances of survival are good.

Mehdi's wife Anna wakes up from her coma and Mehdi learns that she is paraplegic . He feels obliged to take care of her. Gretchen gives him a choice and Mehdi chooses Anna, even though he loves Gretchen.

When Gretchen collapses a short time later and can call Marc at the last second, Marc saves her life and kisses her again. The two chat and it becomes clear that they have deeper feelings for each other and really want to try this time. Gretchen is overjoyed. What neither of them know at this point is that Gabi has noticed everything. Shortly before, she let the victim die because he had sworn to sue her, and so she develops a perfidious plan. She tells Marc about the death of the accident victim and blackmails him by proposing to her.

Although Marc tried to prevent it, Gretchen also appears in the cafeteria for this marriage proposal and has to watch her great love propose to someone else, although it was only a few hours before after a happy ending for her and had looked him.

At the end of the last episode of the first season, Gretchen decides to finally close with Marc and rush back to life.

Gretchen's mother Bärbel Haase had an affair while on vacation. During a visit, her lover sneaks the fortune that should be the old-age provision of Gretchen's parents. She resumes working as a nurse after 35 years. In her service she realizes that the doctor Dr. Knechtelsdorfer secretly planted hemp in the basement of the hospital to produce cannabis as an intoxicant . Bärbel spontaneously decides to help with the cultivation.

Anna Kaan, who worked as a prostitute in the past , overcomes her paralysis and leaves town with her daughter because she still owes her pimp money. The pimp and his people visit Dr. Kaan and make it clear to him that he has to pay for his wife's debts. When Dr. But Kaan refuses to pay Anna's debts, he is shadowed by the pimp's men.

Gretchen continues to try to find out what Sister Gabi Dr. Marc Meier blackmailed by breaking into their shared apartment to get to the bottom of the matter. She is discovered by Marc and the two get closer in the shower. Sister Gabi finds out and carries out her threat to go to the police. But Gretchen manages to make Gabi implausible to the police. Sister Gabi gives up and pulls in with Dr. Meier - for which this Gretchen is very grateful.

Meanwhile, Gretchen falls in love with Alexis, whom she married drunk in Las Vegas in the run-up to her thirtieth birthday . After individual misunderstandings, they plan to marry in church.

A paternity test shows that not Marc, as assumed, but the junkyard owner Kalle is the father of Gabi's child. She loses the child after an accident in the junkyard and blames Gretchen for always being lucky and Gabi herself just unlucky. However, Gabi finds out that Alexis von Buren is not who he claims to be. It turns out that the alleged millionaire is a man named Frank who is hiding a body in his house.

While Gretchen and Alexis are planning their wedding, Marc finds out that he still has feelings for Gretchen. Both he and Mehdi try to propose marriage to Gretchen, but Gretchen has apparently already made up her mind and is fighting off the impulsive proposals of the two.

Gretchen's friend Gina Amsel comes to the wedding from London. To make Gretchen jealous, Marc plans to sleep with Gina on the hen party. But it doesn't come to that; Marc leaves the half-naked Gina standing, because he simply “doesn't feel like it anymore”. Instead, he kisses Gretchen a little later, whom Marc rejects, confused. Marc finally wants to tell Gretchen that he loves her the next day in the hospital. Gina manages to prevent this by anticipating him and explaining to Gretchen that she slept with Marc. During that night Gabi blackmailed Frank with the fact that she knew of his false identity and asked for money. Frank explains that he and Lissi happened to come to the villa some time ago and found Alexis von Buren hung up in the villa. Alexis (Frank) walled him up and assumed his identity so that he could start a new life. The requested money, which Alexis (Frank) deposited for Gabi in the dumpster in front of his house, is found by chance by Bärbel and unexpectedly solves her money problems.

Days later, with the help of Sister Gabi and Sister Sabine, Gretchen succeeds in locating the Virion's host and producing an antiserum to end the epidemic .

The mother of the real Alexis, Mechthild von Buren, immediately realizes that Alexis is not her real son and threatens him to make the truth public if he shouldn't sleep with her. Since Gretchen is very worried about Marc, she decides to check on Marc despite the planned wedding night. However, when she meets him with another woman, she runs away angrily. During a discussion between the two of them, Marc fell ill with the pandemic disease and had to be treated in the hospital.

Mechthild von Buren dies that same night in an accident with a radio in the bathtub. Later in the evening Gabi witnesses his attempt to get the body out of the villa and helps Frank to get rid of it for a further payment.

While still in the hospital, Gretchen meets her friend Gina, who confesses that she has not slept with Marc and is convinced that he is the right person.

After a few days, the police appear in front of the villa and try to arrest Alexis. After turbulence, he flees, but tries repeatedly to make contact with Gretchen. As part of a police operation, Gretchen uses Marc as bait, which doesn't seem to work. Marc kisses Gretchen and confesses his feelings to her. Alexis then attacks Marc, but is able to flee again. Marc is shot by a policewoman.

In the basement of a student union, human experiments with brain implants are carried out. Gretchen solves the case and is kidnapped, but saved by Marc.

In the last episode, Gretchen learns that Marc was abused by his father as a child, but gives up further attempts to approach him. She decides to accept a patient's offer and travel to Africa alone. Parallels to Turkish for beginners

Doctor's Diary contains many parallels and allusions to Turkish for Beginners , a series in the First , also from Bora Drachtkin's pen. There are allusions as follows between the two series: In the series finale of Turkish for Beginners, Doris seeks a gynecologist. This is embodied by Kai Schumann , who also plays a gynecologist in Doctor's Diary. In the doctor series, however, Anna Stieblich plays a patient of the same gynecologist, who has to sound like in the series that she cannot have children. Although not too obvious, this was an indirect allusion, which was also confirmed by Dierterkin in the audio commentary. Another allusion is shown when Gretchen from Doctor's Diary thinks back to her past and meets her teacher Mrs. Schneider, played by Katharina Kaali . Kaali plays the role of Diana Schneider, teacher in Turkish for Beginners.

Production and broadcast

The series was produced by the Polyphon company on behalf of RTL and ORF . The film was shot between August and December 2007 on 55 original locations in Berlin. In the first two seasons, around 90 bars of chocolate and 400 mouthguards were used for the series, according toquotemeter.de . Oliver Schmitz ( poor millionaires , Turkish for beginners , Paris, je t'aime ), Christian Ditter ( French for beginners , Turkish for beginners , school girls ) and Sophie Allet-Coche ( Angie , Mein Leben & Ich ) acted as directors . The scripts are by Grimme Prize winner and lead author Bora Drachtkin, Vivian Hoppe and Silke Steiner.

While RTL first broadcast the hospital series on June 23, 2008, ORF showed the series on June 24, 2008 and ended it after four weeks due to the double episode broadcast. Instead, RTL opted for the option of showing the program for seven weeks. The original plan was to air the series in the fall of 2008.

The series was renewed for two more seasons on August 5, 2008. The second season started on August 3, 2009 simultaneously on ORF 1 and RTL. On average, the second season came to 17 percent in the advertising-relevant target group compared to 16.4 percent in the first season. The order for new scripts for the third season was placed in September 2009. At the end of April 2010, filming began on the third season, which has been broadcast on ORF eins on Mondays and on RTL on Wednesdays since January 5, 2011 after the first episode that was broadcast together .

The broadcast ended on February 14th in Austria and on February 16th in Germany. In Switzerland, the station SF two broadcast the first season from November 29, 2010 to January 4, 2011. In October 2011 the discontinuation of the series was announced due to time problems of the cast and crew, as all those involved are currently involved in other projects.

The first reactions in the media were mixed. While the Austrian daily Der Standard as the series with the most successful German films of the past one, the online magazine looks Quotenmeter.de in the dialogues a frantic attempt to reach slapstick. While the online magazine draws parallels to Grey's Anatomy , Der Standard sees no direct similarities with the supposed US model.
