action

season 1

After the millionaire hotelier family Gabriel had lived in luxury for years, their life takes a decisive turn one day: On the one hand, due to the bankruptcy of the hotel empire of father Paul Gabriel, on the other hand due to personal bankruptcy, the family loses everything from one day to the next - you Money, your villa and your staff. Their former chauffeur Fritz makes it possible for them to live in his prefabricated apartment in the future . In addition, Markus Münzberger, the hotelier who took over the Gabriel empire in the course of a foreclosure auction, is hostile to the Gabriels, which is why he does not offer Paul Gabriel a job in one of his hotels.

The two daughters Lilo and Sarah Gabriel continue to attend the same private school that they had attended when they were rich. From the start, Lilo competes with Münzberger's daughter Franka, who has been her arch-enemy from the moment she goes bankrupt, while Sarah and Christoph Münzberger, Franka's brother, develop a love affair over time. Lilo also makes the acquaintance of Timo, a sushi restaurant owner who runs his small eatery near the prefabricated housing estate in which the Gabriels now live, and begins to earn some money with him as a temporary worker. Finally, there is a spark between the two as well.

In addition to everyday inconveniences, such as taking out the rubbish yourself, having to cook or wash yourself, financial bottlenecks also occur time and again. Not just once do the Gabriels and Fritz face having to vacate their apartment because the rent has not been paid, or lose the connection to the power grid. It is precisely in the course of such events that they, especially their mother Adina Gabriel, get to know other people's problems and put themselves in their shoes.

Towards the end of the season, Adina and Paul decide that Lilo should graduate from her godmother and Adina's sister Esther in New York . By winning a flight on the “ Chrysanthemum Ball” in the Münzberger Hotel, you can also realize this plan. Unfortunately, the relationship between Lilo and Timo broke up due to a misunderstanding, which is why Lilo does not shy away from spending the next time in New York. When Lilo leaves the airport, she thinks back to the time since the family bankruptcy and wants to come back sometime to help her family. She also wishes that Timo doesn't forget her.

season 2

Lilo is still in New York with her godmother Esther, but does not feel comfortable with her. For this reason she breaks off contact and sets off for the city, where she meets the financial advisor Nico, who lets Lilo feel his sympathy and invites her to a luxury hotel that has just been taken over by the Münzbergers. After a few days, however, Nico runs quietly and leaves Lilo on the bill for the suite. The Münzberger family took this with them to Germany and offered to work off the debts as a chambermaid in one of their hotels so as not to burden their family. Timo, the manager of the sushi restaurant, no longer appears this season.

Paul, Adina, Sarah and Fritz now have their own problems. Constant financial bottlenecks, arguments with the neighbors of the prefabricated housing estate and difficulties in looking for work make the Gabriel family and their former chauffeur difficult. After Paul u. a. Having worked as an animal interpreter, employee in a sauerkraut factory and in the luxury dog grooming salon, but was never able to keep the job any longer, he met the hotel owner Joe, who runs a small guesthouse, which is poorly attended and therefore also bankrupt is threatened. Nevertheless, Paul decides to get back into the hotel business and would like to try to turn the pension into a luxury hotel with the help of his many years of experience. However, Joe abandons him and goes into hiding when former creditors demand their money from him. Paul has now won a hotel, but has to pay for the debts that go with it. After living together in the prefabricated apartment building became too tight, the Gabriels decided to move into the pension and concentrate on rebuilding it.

Sarah is now pregnant by Christoph Münzberger. He wants to stand by her, but is put under pressure by his parents, who raise the child alone under all circumstances and want to deprive Sarah of access rights. Christoph breaks up with his parents and moves in with the Gabriels. Meanwhile, Lilo falls in love with Julian Levenkron, the son of a bank billionaire. Julian is initially still in a relationship with Franka Münzberger, but separates from her and turns to Lilo, who now hopes to finally regain access to the world of the rich. However, it turns out that Julian is actually gay and Lilo is only marrying for the first time. Lilo cancels the planned wedding at short notice and separates from Julian.

After Paul started working on municipal waste disposal with Fritz, he ultimately lost this job too. He had previously offered Fritz to contribute financially to the pension, as he could not pay off the debts on his own. Now he wants to release Fritz as a business partner again, which makes him feel exploited and doesn't want to know anything more about the Gabriels. Markus Münzberger also found out that the pension was illegally built at the time, which is why he applied for the building to be demolished. The family and Christoph are once again left with nothing and want to move back to Fritz, who does not, however, open to them. The series ends with the "poor millionaires" standing in front of the prefabricated building as in the first episode.

background

Filming for the first season began in Munich on October 5th, 2004 and lasted until December 6th, 2004. Originally planned as a miniseries , the end of which was already certain from the start, Arme Millionären became two double episodes on August 22nd and 29th, 2005 RTL and ORF 1 broadcast. The first season of the series with only four episodes achieved a 20 percent market share with around four million viewers despite prophecies of doom, making it a surprise success. A second season with eight episodes was commissioned shortly afterwards and shot from February 2006. The broadcast began on September 8, 2006, and the first episode did not reach the market values of the first season.

The subsequent episodes also achieved lower ratings between 10 and 15 percent; the odds of the last episode were 11 percent. According to RTL press spokesman Claus Richter, the series “did not go as well as hoped”, which is why a continuation of the series was neither confirmed nor denied before the last episode was broadcast. Ultimately, no sequels were made. In July 2007, eleven episodes were repeated on RTL, which were a failure with only 6 percent viewers. Even a repetition on Super RTL 2008 did not exceed 2.5 percent. Both seasons have been available on DVD since 2008 .

The series is told via voice-over from the point of view of the character "Lilo Gabriel", embodied by Mavie Hörbiger. But the voice off-screen belongs to the actress and voice actress Ghadah Al-Akel . The family name Rafael from the first season changes from the second (without mentioning the content) to Gabriel . RTL justified the change by not wanting to make any reference to living or previously existing people. When ORF broadcast the first season again, the family name was appropriately changed to Gabriel , e.g. B. by synchronizing relevant dialog points. So also in the repetition of the first season 2007 on RTL and the DVD version. Almost all vehicles in the second season carry the fictitious city license plate I, while in the first season license plates such as STA( Landkreis Starnberg ) and M( Munich ) are used. The garbage trucks in the second season, however, have BSR stickers ( Berliner Stadtreinigung ), the color of the operational clothing corresponds to the BSR. The bus in the first season bears the old paintwork of the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft , as well as their sticker with the label MVG.
