I Believe I Can Fly is a pop ballad from singer and songwriter R. Kelly , who also wrote and produced the piece. The song was the 1996 theme song for the film Space Jam and was released on Kelly's album R. in 1998. The title reached the top of the charts in many countries and is one of the most successful songs of the 1990s.

I Believe I Can Fly is the most successful and best known song by R. Kelly. The title reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts; it topped the charts in the United Kingdom , Ireland , New Zealand , the Netherlands and Switzerland . The song was a top ten hit in various other countries. It is listed among the hundred most successful Billboard Hot 100 songs of the 1990s. The song also received silver, gold or platinum records in eight countries.

use

The title is used in various feature films, television series and in sports. The song was not only the theme song for the film Space Jam , but is also quoted in various other films. In the comedy Drumline , the song is performed by the school band during the high school graduation ceremony. In the animated film Ice Age 2: Now thaws , the opossum Eddie sings the title before it hits a tree. In the children's film On Mission as Animals, Wilson, voiced by Donald Faison , tunes the title while jumping into the pool. Jim Carrey sings the song in the movie Dick and Jane while he's in the elevator. The song is also used in the film Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Kahlohr and in the series One and One Makes Four . The song can also be heard at many basketball encounters.

Cover versions

The title was not only performed in many casting shows , but also covered by various artists. In 1998 Patti Labelle released her version on the live album Live! One night only . In 1999 James Ingram released a cover version of the songs on his compilation Forever More (Love Songs, Hits & Duets) . Two years later, two cover versions of the gospel singer Yolanda Adams followed on her live CD The Experience . The Chinese-American singer William Hung, known from American Idol , published his interpretation of the song on his debut album Inspiration . The song can also be found on Bianca Ryan's 2006 debut album. The singer also covers the ballad on the last album by jazz legend Etta James . In 2009, a cover version appeared on the album Songs for My Mother by Irish singer Ronan Keating .

criticism

The song is one of the 500 best songs of all time according to Rolling Stone magazine and won three Grammys in 1998 for best movie song, best R&B song and best male vocal performance in R&B. The piece received positive reviews and was recognized by most critics as a good ballad.
