Patti LaBelle (* 24. May 1944 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ; actually Patricia Louise Holt ) is an American R & B - and soul - singer and two-time Grammy -Preisträgerin.

Bluebelles & Labelle

Patti LaBelle began singing in church when she was 14. In 1958 she founded "The Ordettes" with her three friends Cindy Birdsong, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash. In 1962 they received a record deal , whereby Patricia Holt became "Patti LaBelle". The Ordettes called themselves from then on "The Bluebelles".

In the same year Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles had their first Top 40 hit with I Sold My Heart to the Junkman . They performed in the legendary New York Apollo Theater and became one of the hottest vocal groups of their time. Her hits included Danny Boy , Down the Aisle (The Wedding Song) , You'll Never Walk Alone, and Somewhere over the Rainbow .

In 1970 the Bluebelles went to England after Cindy Birdsong left the group and joined the Supremes . The following year they came back to America with a new name: "LaBelle"; At the end of the year they released the LP Gonna Take a Miracle together with Laura Nyro . In 1975 they had a number 1 with Lady Marmalade , the accompanying album Nightbirds won gold . In Germany LaBelle was less successful, only her single Lady Marmalade was able to place in the German charts in 1975 in the top 20.

In 1976 the group broke up. The following year, Patti LaBelle released her first solo album of the same name . In 1983 she had two big hits with If Only You Knew and Love, Need & Want You . In 1985 the film Beverly Hills Cop helped her songs New Attitude and Stir It Up to success. In 1986 their most successful album, Winner in You , came out with the number 1 hit On My Own, composed by Burt Bacharach . For the Bond film License to Kill , she sang the song If You Asked Me To . In 1989, LaBelle worked with Prince , who composed two songs for her album Be Yourself .

In 1992 Patti LaBelle won her first Grammy Award in the form of the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Performance for Burnin ' . In 1998 a second Grammy followed in this category. In 1993 she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in 2007 the Excellence in Media Award of the GLAAD Media Awards . Some of their songs were re-recorded by young pop artists, such as Lady Marmalade by Christina Aguilera , P! Nk , Mýa and Lil 'Kim (for the film Moulin Rouge ), or processed, such as B. Love, Need & Want You by Nelly and Kelly Rowland in their number 1 hit Dilemma . LaBelle is a huge Mariah Carey fan . Both recorded a duet together called Got to Be Real .

In 2008, Rolling Stone listed Patti LaBelle as 95th of the 100 best singers of all time .

In July 2019, the Patti LaBelle Way was inaugurated in her native Philadelphia .

From October to November 2019, LaBelle took part as Flower in the second season of the US offshoot of The Masked Singer , in which she reached eighth of a total of 16 places.
