Originally, the song, written and produced by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager , was to appear on Dionne Warwick's Friends album . When this did not happen, Patti LaBelle took care of him. Initially the song was not planned as a duet, but later LaBelle decided to record the song with Michael McDonald due to the meaning of the lyrics.
On My Own was released worldwide on March 22, 1986. It became a number one hit in the United States and Canada .
