Patti LaBelle is the debut album of American Soul - singer Patti LaBelle from 1977. It is the first album that LaBelle after 16 years in her band Labelle (originally Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles) solo recorded. On October 13, 1977 the album was released on CBS Records , Columbia Records and WestSide Records. The album is known for its dance hit Joy to Have Your Love , the gospel- inspired ballad You Are My Friend and the mid-tempo piece I Think About You by Angelo "Funky Knuckles" Nocentelli, which is in the third season of the series RuPaul's Drag Race was played.

Background information

Before Labelle recorded the album, she wanted to retire from the music business after almost 20 years as the lead singer of her successful girl group Labelle. After the group split in March 1977, tension arose in their eight-year marriage to Armstead Edwards and they sought marriage counseling. After settling their differences, her husband became her manager too. Labelle went into the studio and began working on her debut album of the same name. Labelle recorded the album in New Orleans . David Rubinson acted as producer, as on Labelle's last album before she split from her band, Chameleon , and later Rubinson worked with the Pointer Sisters .

Labelle signed a recording deal with Epic Records . The release of their debut album was announced for October 1977. During this time, the first single Joy to Have Your Love became a minor R&B hit, and dance number Dan Swit Me was quite successful on the dance charts. The most successful track on the album was a ballad called You Are My Friend , composed by LaBelle, Edwards and LaBelle's mentor, James "Budd" Ellison. She sang the song for the first time in London in front of an audience and immediately earned a standing ovation, which gave Labelle motivation for her further career. The album was a moderate success, peaking at number 62 on the Billboard 200 and number 31 on the R&B albums chart. The music critics praised Labelle's debut album.

reception

Allmusic.com's Ron Wynn wrote that at the time, Labelle was still in the process of finding her niche. Her later trademarks have not all been heard yet. In addition to pop and soul cover songs, “strange material” like Willie Dixon's You Can't Judge a Book by the Cover can also be heard. It awarded three out of five stars.
