Reba McEntire
Reba Nell McEntire (* 28. March 1955 in McAlester , Oklahoma ) is one of the most successful country - singers . She has been an artist since 1976, had 25 number 1 hits on the country charts , released 26 studio albums, some of which were featured in both country and pop charts , and has sold more than 80 million records . McEntire has received 74 awards, including for her acting. In 1987, 1994 and 2018 she was awarded a Grammy and in 2018 the Kennedy Prize .
biography
Reba McEntire's father is rodeo rider Clark McEntire, she has two sisters and a brother, with whom she founded the "Kiowa High School Cowboy Band" in 1969. The group sold 1,000 records from their local hit The Ballad of John McEntire in 1971 .
McEntire graduated from high school in June 1973 and enrolled at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She had also followed in her father's footsteps and participated in rodeo competitions. On December 10, 1974, she sang the American national anthem during a cable television rodeo final in Oklahoma City . Red Steagall heard her, was impressed by her voice and invited her to Nashville to produce a demo tape. In late 1975 McEntire got a record deal with Mercury Records . Their first single, I Don't Want to Be a One Night Stand , reached number 88 on the Billboard country charts in May 1976 .
In June of the same year she married Charles Battles, who also became her manager, and in December she graduated as a teacher. She released a few more unsuccessful singles, and in April 1977 her debut album, Reba, was released . In September, McEntire made his first appearance in the Grand Ole Opry . She had her first top ten hit in August 1980 with (You Lift Me) Up to Heaven and it wasn't until 1982 that she achieved her first number 1 hit with Can't Even Get the Blues . In the following years she played in the opening act for the Statler Brothers and worked with artists such as Conway Twitty , Ronnie Milsap and Mickey Gilley .
In October 1983, McEntire moved to MCA Records and became one of the most popular artists of the decade. Between 1985 and 1992, she had 24 singles in the top ten and 14 number 1 titles. Her marriage to Battles was divorced in 1987, and in 1989 she married her road manager and steel guitarist Narvel Blackstock, who brought three children into the marriage and with whom she has a son, Shelby Blackstock , born in 1990 .
In March 1991, eight of McEntire's band members died in a plane crash. Years later, the singer described the accident as the most difficult thing she had to endure in her life. Her album For My Broken Heart , released in the same year, reflected her state of mind and contained only melancholy songs. The album received very good reviews, some call it the best album of their career.
McEntire's success continued in the 1990s. In 2004 she had another number 1 hit with Somebody . In 2007 she was able to place herself at number 2 with a duet with Kelly Clarkson Because of You . For the first time in her career, the accompanying album Reba: Duets reached number 1 on the Billboard 200 in the two categories of pop and country album charts in the first week . The album Keep On Loving You from 2009 also reached first place in both charts.
Since 2015 McEntire has performed with the country duo Brooks & Dunn and the Show Together in Vegas at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. With Brooks & Dunn she had a number one hit ( If You See Him / If You See Her ) in the country charts in 1998 .
As of January 2018, McEntire was featured in several commercials for the Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food chain as the first female Colonel Sanders . Her appearance as a drag king was criticized by some right-wing extremists. McEntire was honored for the third time in her career at the 2018 Grammy Awards . After receiving country awards in 1987 and 1994, this time she received an award in the “Roots Gospel” category for the album Sing It Now: Songs of Faith & Hope .
actress
In 1989, McEntire made her film debut as an actress in Tremors - In the Land of Rocket Worms , to the soundtrack of which she featured Why Not Tonight? contributed. She then worked in the films Maverick - The Colt on the Belt, An Ace Up Your Sleeve , North , The Little Superstrols and One Night at McCool’s . In 2002 she won the People's Choice Award for her comedy series Reba , which was shown in Germany on RTL from October 2005 . The series was discontinued in Germany after the second season, in the USA it ran in six seasons until February 2007. Since October 2, 2009, the Reba series has been broadcast on Super-RTL again and continued from episode 9 of the second season.
McEntire was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Heather Gummer in Tremors . Nevertheless, she did not play in the sequel Tremors 2 - The Return of the Rocket Worms in 1996 , as she was on a world tour. She returned to television in 2012 with a lead role in the ABC series Malibu Country . The series was discontinued after 18 episodes.
