One Night at McCool's ( One Night at McCool's ) is an American comedy thriller by Harald Zwart from the year 2001 .
action
In “One Night at McCool's” the same story is told from the point of view of three men and in many flashbacks: The three men are the barman Randy, his cousin, the lawyer Carl Harding and a policeman named Dehling. All three fall in love with the same woman as the story progresses.
Randy is a poor barman who lives in his late mother's house and stands behind the counter at McCool's that night. On one of these nights he met the extremely attractive Jewel Valentine. This is tackled in the parking lot by her significant other, a brutal rocker named Utah. Randy interferes and takes Jewel home with her at her request. At this point, it already indicates to the viewer that Jewel is not completely honest and is following a plan. She seduces Randy in his apartment and sexual acts ensue. Then she confesses to him that she and her partner are doing "this thing" - that the situation was set and that she would now normally call her boyfriend to rob Randy in his house. But now she has fallen in love with him, so that it is impossible for her to proceed as planned. A few hours later, Utah arrives, threatens Randy with a revolver, forces him to drive him to the bar, and is shot there by Jewel. Later the two call the police and give false information about the incident. From now on Jewel lives with Randy. He soon realizes that the young woman immediately takes over the reins and wants to completely reorganize both his house and his life according to her ideas and transform them into a kind of doll's house from the mail order catalog. She also throws his mother's snow globes in the trash, although they mean a lot to him, because during his lifetime his mother said to him that “as long as we have these, we will never be homeless”.
Police investigator Dehling is investigating the murder case and spontaneously falls in love with Valentine, in whom he sees a kind of reincarnation of his late wife. Randy's married cousin, the overly self-absorbed attorney Carl Harding, falls for the beautiful redhead and tries everything to win her over. After Randy increasingly resists the paternalism of his new girlfriend, who also implicates him in two more crimes, one of which culminates in an unplanned murder, Jewel begins to play the trio off against each other. So she fakes a case of domestic violence to the investigator, whereupon Dehling immediately obtains an injunction that locks Randy out of his own house. In order to get free legal advice, she also starts a sado-masochistic affair with his cousin.
In desperation, Randy decides to hire the killer Burmeister to have Jewel killed. In a turbulent finale, all five of the named protagonists meet in Randy's house. To make matters worse, Utah's psychopathic and heavily armed brother suddenly appears. A shootout breaks out in the course of which Utah's brother and Dehling are killed. Carl escapes at first, but is shortly afterwards killed by a falling safe. Jewel runs away with Burmeister, but symbolically gives Randy the house back by placing one of the unscathed snow globes on the doorstep.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films sees One Night at McCool's as a “modern variation of the classic femme fatale theme”, which “tells the events of one night in three flashbacks with an ironic joke and uses different aesthetic means according to the various wishes of the men . "
According to film critic Roger Ebert , the comedy doesn't quite work. It is so busy with its structure that the viewer cannot identify with the characters. The actors would do a "good job".
Olaf Schneekloth writes on CountryMusicNews.de: “Black, intelligently told crime comedy with top cast. Those who loved Crazy About Mary will love One Night at McCool's . Reba McEntire's role as a psychotherapist is short, but biting. "
