“The film makes ample use of clichés, sometimes self-deprecatingly, and sporadically drifts into the absurd and comical when unbelievable revelations pile up or the old-fashioned levers to close hell portals jam. But this overture emphatically underlines its franchise potential, which visually achieves a lot with an estimated budget of 60 million dollars and convinces with suspense, crisp action, good effects, some original gimmicks and committed young stars who should not only conquer the fans of the books. “Instead of giving the viewer the time to let the wild fantasy story about sexy emo warriors, magical portals and tricky love triangles work on them, director Harald Zwart fires up the usual genre ingredients like machine gun salvos without any sense of timing his audience. "

“Despite the nagging of a reviewer who obviously does not belong to the target audience of 'Chronicles of the Underworld - City of Bones', the doom of the West should not be proclaimed here. As 'Constantin' already anticipated, the franchise has the potential to become the next big teen film event after Twilight, which will also find its audience beyond the readers of the book series and at the same time raise as many haters the more successful it becomes. Once again an angry mob will be outraged that in addition to the monster flattening, romance is creeping in and the male characters are sometimes androgynous. But let's keep in mind that these are not the problems and that neither Twilight nor Chronicles of the Underworld would have been better films if a guy Vin Diesel had been cast as a shadow hunter and thus presented a more normative male image. "

“It goes haywire in the world hidden in ours. Whether Matrix-like seers, Silent Hill-like demons, fluffy sound effects or martial sword fights between Jace and the insane and insanely brilliant antagonist Valentine Morgenstern, who should definitely hypnotize the female audience. The fact that Jonathan Rhys Meyers was able to give his characters just as much aesthetic grace as conflict-ridden intensity and polarizing fascination in the past via a completely surreal type of acting should have placed high expectations on his performance as Valentine. It is all the more commendable that he confidently lives up to those expectations. Thus, a single glance of Valentine's blood freezes in your veins, while at the same time he succeeds in adding a motivating layer of suffering turmoil to the symbol of evil with theatrical expressiveness and film-engaging presence under the omnipresent veil of devastating threat, which is a silent answer to the an existential question about the fascination of evil. Chronicles of the Underworld - City of Bones is a thoroughly intense experience that gets under your skin, thanks to gripping effects and fascinating actors, despite compositional inconsistencies. "

Gross profit

With a production cost of $ 60 million, the film grossed about $ 80.2 million by November 15, 2013.

continuation

Even before the first part was released, a sequel was announced for 2014. Filming was scheduled to begin on September 23, 2013 in Toronto . For the sequel, Lily Collins , Jamie Campbell Bower and Robert Sheehan are set to return in their roles. The cast should be supplemented by Sigourney Weaver as shadow hunter.

On September 11, 2013, the production company Constantin Film announced that the production of the second part had been put on hold for the time being. The reason given was the disappointing box office result. A month later, Constantin Film announced that the production of City of Ashes had resumed. Instead of a second film, a series was chosen that was released under the title Shadowhunters . Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower do not play in it, however. However, the series is not a further narration, but reinterprets the novel.
