action

The books are about Clary Fray, a girl raised by her single mother in Brooklyn . Her father, she believes, is the soldier Jonathan Clark, who died before she was born. However, when her mother Jocelyn suddenly disappears and she is attacked by a strange monster in her apartment, she learns that she has shadowhunter blood in her and that Jonathan Clark is not her father. Together with the other shadow hunters Jace, Alec and Isabelle Lightwood as well as her best friend Simon Lewis and other companions, such as the warlock Magnus Bane, she tries to find the chalice of angels in front of Valentin, because he is planning terrible things. Clary also learns that there are werewolves, elves, elves, vampires, nymphs and satyrs and that these are called shadowworlders / beings. The shadow hunters and the shadow worlders / beings live according to the "agreement" that both sides have drawn up together.

In the first volume, 15-year-old Clary (an abbreviation of Clarissa-Adele) gets to know Jace (an abbreviation of Jonathan Christopher) and with him a world completely unknown to her. As the book progresses, it turns out that she is a shadow hunter. Her mother was attacked by demons and put herself into a death-like sleep from which she did not wake up during the plot of the first book. Together with Jace and the others, she wants to find out how her mother can be woken up again. At the end of the first book, the main characters discover that Jace and Clary, who fall in love in the course of the plot, are the children of Valentin Morgenstern and Jocelyn Fairchild and are thus direct siblings. Valentin steals the angel's chalice from them.

In the second volume, Simon transforms himself into a vampire who then has to be rescued because he and other children of the shadow worlds were kidnapped by Valentin. Jace is also suspected of being his father's spy, which is why the Inquisition locks him up in the City of Bones for one night. That night, Valentin manages to take Mellartach , the sword of souls, which he now wants to provide with demonic powers . A battle later ensues on Valentine's yacht between demons and shadow hunters, with Clary's ability to create new runes helping them destroy the yacht. Now Valentin only needs the mirror, but so far this has only appeared in legends, which is why it seems unlikely that Valentine's children and their friends will find it.

In the third volume of the underworld it emerges that Jace is not Clary's biological brother, but only her adoptive brother, and that he does not have demon blood like her biological brother. Jace is now called Jonathan Herondale, his father Stephen Herondale perished, as well as his mother Celine Herondale and the grandmother Inquisition. The only living Herondale is Amatis, the sister of Lucian Graymark. Valentin discovers that the mirror he is looking for is Lake Lyn in Idris , the homeland of the shadowhunters. He ensures that there are as many shadow hunters as possible in Idris when he attacks the capital Alicante with more than a thousand demons. He gets support from his biological son Jonathan Christopher, a half-demon who makes it possible for the demons to be able to penetrate Idris in the first place. Jonathan Christopher's father leaves him alone, but what he doesn't know is that Jace was in the room with him. The two brothers then duel. Jace wins the fight and goes to Lyn Lake, where Valentin summons the angel Raziel. At his side is Clary, whose blood he needs to summon the angel. Valentin kills Jace. He demands blood from the angel in order to create a new generation of better shadow hunters. The angel kills Valentin and offers Clary to grant her a wish, she wishes Jace back what she gets from the angel. Clary and Jace get together.

In the fourth volume, Clary, Jace and Simon fight against the demon Lilith, who has taken possession of Jace and, because he was briefly dead and then brought back to life without a protective spell, was able to bind him to Clary's biological brother, so that when one dies the two the other inevitably follows him to death. They manage to disperse Lilith between several worlds so that it will be centuries before she can put herself back together.

In the fifth volume, Jace is kidnapped by his brother, who wants to conjure up a new breed of better shadowhunters with Clary (she volunteered to find out what is wrong with Jace) and Jace at his side, only that they are not bound to any angels but to the demon Lilith, and only to a limited extent. Meanwhile, Simon, Isabelle, Alec and Magnus Bane are tinkering with an object with which they Jace and Sebastian (this is what Jonathan Christopher calls himself now because he thinks the name Jocelyn and Valentin chose for him) as inappropriate because his parents think it is both have cheated) can separate from each other again. They summon an angel who gives them the sword Glorius . The problem is that Jace is now carrying heavenly fire and anyone who touches him is burned. Sebastian can escape and, as he previously informed Jace and Clary, wants to create an army of dark shadowhunters.

In the sixth and final volume of the novel series, Sebastian officially declares war on the shadow hunters. He raids institutes in order to transform shadow hunters into dark shadow hunters with the help of his hell goblet, whereby they are loyal to him and help him to implement his dark plans. Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Alec and Simon follow Sebastian to Edom so they can stop him from destroying the world. Despite Sebastian's demonic powers, which make him invulnerable, he cannot convince his sister to rule with him over the dimensions. Instead, he is killed by the heavenly fire used as a weapon, which destroys the evil in a being. Thus, Clary and her friends can prevent the destruction of the entire shadow world.

Characters

  • Clarissa "Clary" Adele Fray / Fairchild is the sister of Jonathan Morgenstern and daughter of Valentine Morgenstern and Jocelyn Fairchild. To protect Clary, Jocelyn changes her last name to Fray to stay away from the shadow world. Clary has long and curly red hair, freckles and bright green eyes. She is very small.
  • Jonathan Christopher "Jace" Herondale (also known as Wayland, Morgenstern and Lightwood) is described as tall and muscular, with scars on his golden skin from faded magical symbols called runes. He has curly golden hair and golden eyes and, like Clary, is a shadow hunter. Jace is one of Nephilim's best fighters, as Izzy has stated that he has killed more demons than anyone his age and is happy to defend his family. Often flirtatious and insensitive, Jace is described as projecting false arrogance due to an insecurity that he is not good enough.
  • Simon Lewis (also known as Lovelace) is a tall, skinny boy with a mop of curly brown hair, brown eyes, and glasses. He often wears t-shirts with gamer slogans. In City of Lost Souls, Simon describes himself as a "hipster", but his best friend Clary calls him a "geek". Simon is the only character to start his life as an ordinary human, but in City of Ashes he becomes a vampire. After becoming a vampire, he will never age and will remain physically 16 years old.
  • Isabelle "Izzy" Sophia Lightwood is a sixteen-year-old shadowhunter who is described as tall, thin and beautiful. She has long black hair and black eyes, and often wears her signature gold electron whip, as shown in City of Bones, where Izzy donned a shapeshifter, the blue-haired demon in Pandemonium. Isabelle is described as incredibly girlish, but with a violent attitude. She often comes across as flirtatious and cannot have a serious relationship until she becomes interested in Simon Lewis.
  • Alexander "Alec" Gideon Lightwood is the oldest Lightwood sibling. He is a shadow hunter with limp black hair and blue eyes. He is described as quiet but protective of his younger siblings: Isabelle and Max, the latter of whom dies in City of Glass.
  • Magnus Bane is the self-described, free-roaming bisexual high warlock of Brooklyn. Magnus is an approximately 800 year old warlock who appears to be 19 years old. He is tall and thin with jet black hair and amber and green cat eyes.
  • Lucian "Luke" Garroway / Graymark is a former shadow hunter and former assistant in command of the county. His fiancée is Jocelyn Fairchild and he is Clary's stepfather. He is described as calm, level-headed, and righteous.
  • Jocelyn Fray / Fairchild is a shadow hunter, a former member of the circle and the mother of Clary and Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern. She was once married to Valentine, but after the birth of their first child, Jonathan, she learned that Valentine mixed demon blood into her food, making Jonathan a monster.
  • Jonathan Christopher (Sebastian) Morgenstern is Clary's brother. Like her, he's a shadow hunter, but he was born with demon blood in his veins. It was given to him by his father Valentine while his mother, Jocelyn, was pregnant. Jonathan is described with pitch black eyes without white (as a baby, but when he's older they are just black inside), a sharply angled face, and blonde, almost white hair.

Reviews

City of Bones was hugely popular when it came out, ranking # 8 on The New York Times Best Seller list (Children's books) in April 2007. Publishers Weekly described City of Bones as “a bubbling urban fantasy story that contains pretty much every creature that is known in the fantasy genre "(" a sprawling urban fantasy packed with just about every type of creature known to the genre "). Locus praised the book as "a highly readable first novel". A review in the School Library Journal noted that the book has a variety of narrative weaknesses, including characters who have been "sporadically characterized" and whose behavior was predictable. Even so, it was recognized that the book was entertaining and that readers longed for a sequel. Holly Black , bestselling author of The Spiderwick Mysteries and Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale , said the City of Bones was "funny, dark, and sexy, and one of her favorite books" ("Funny, dark, and sexy. One of my favorite books. ") was. Author Kelly Link said, "It's a battle between vampires and werewolves in Harlem as sexy demon hunters roam the downtown clubs and coffeehouses in Brooklyn - City of Bones is an epic urban fantasy story in the best fun and crazy way." It's vampires versus werewolves in Harlem, while sexy demon hunters prowl through downtown clubs and Brooklyn coffeehouses— City of Bones is epic urban fantasy at its demented, delightful best. Cassandra Clare is a genius. ")

City of Ashes was nominated in 2009 by the ALA Teen's Top Ten, a choice of the ten best books of the year, in the same competition City of Bones reached sixth place in 2008.

City of Glass also received well-meaning reviews, such as Booklist, which stated: there was “a lot of romance, loss, honor and betrayal to make the trip worthwhile. As an experienced storyteller, Clare quickly brings the plot to a satisfying end "(" plenty of romance, loss, honor, and betrayal to make the journey worthwhile. An experienced storyteller, Clare moves the plot quickly to a satisfying end "). School Library Journal wrote, "Though the story is marred by the predictability and pompous writing, Clare continues her talent for mixing hip modern humor with traditional fantasy, and fans eager for the end are more than satisfied." "Though the story is hampered by predictability and overblown writing, Clare continues her talent for mixing hip, modern humor with traditional fantasy, and fans eagerly awaiting the series conclusion should come away more than satisfied").
