Holly Black , née Riggenbach , (born November 10, 1971 in New Jersey ) is an American writer . She became known through her fantasy series The Spiderwick Secrets (English original title "The Spiderwick Chronicles"), which was created in collaboration with the illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi . Then in 1999 she married Theo Black and took his name.

Life

Holly Black was born in 1971 and grew up in New Jersey. Her mother, a painter and doll maker, made her daughter enthusiastic about the world of mythical creatures. As a teenager, Holly wrote many poems and plays and even a book, which she said was miserable. In 1994 she graduated with a BA from College of New Jersey.

She initially worked for medical journals such as The Journal of Pain while studying at Rutgers University . However, she dropped out of college in favor of writing.

In New York, where she worked in 1996 for the game magazine "d8", she met the illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi. During this time she also wrote her first teenage and fantasy novel Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale , which was published in 2002 and received rave reviews; The American Library Association declared the book the “Best Book for Young Adults”. The German translation was published in 2003 under Die Zehnte by Arena Verlag , the latest edition is titled Elfentocher (cbj-Verlag). The first volume of the Spiderwick Chronicles was published in the summer of 2003 . All German editions of her works were translated by Anne Brauner. In 2006 she received the Andre Norton Award for Valiant . In 2014, the Mythopoeic Award for Doll Bones followed .

Holly Riggenbach married the illustrator and web designer Theo Black, whom she knew from high school, in 1999 and took his last name. Holly Black lives in New Jersey with her family and lots of animals.
