cbj is a German publisher for children's and youth literature based in Munich . It was founded in 1968 under the name “C. Bertelsmann Jugendbuchverlag ”and is still an independent part of the Random House publishing group . cbj publishes works by German and international authors. The publisher became known among other things through the book series " Five Friends " by Enid Blyton . In 2008, part of the program was redistributed through a spin-off to the newly created cbt publishing house .

history

The history of cbj goes back to the 19th century . 1835 founded Carl Bertelsmann the C. Bertelsmann Verlag , among whose program also children's books. In 1861, 1869 and most recently in 1955, parts of the Liesching publishing house from Stuttgart were taken over. This also expanded the youth book program. The book for young people later became one of the five divisions of C. Bertelsmann Verlag. When the publishing houses of the Bertelsmann group were brought together in the Bertelsmann publishing group in 1968 , C. Bertelsmann Jugendbuchverlag was founded for children's and youth literature. At the beginning of the 1970s, the C. Bertelsmann Jugendbuchverlag moved its headquarters from Gütersloh to Munich together with the other Bertelsmann public publishers . In 1995, a commercially successful paperback series was started under the name “omnibus”. In 2004 the C. Bertelsmann youth book publisher was finally renamed cbj. This was done to prevent being confused with C. Bertelsmann Verlag. Paperback books for children continued to be published under the “omnibus” brand, paperbacks for young people under “cbt”.

At the same time, the publisher's program was expanded to a notable extent: while previously the company primarily served the age groups from ten or twelve years of age, from now on titles were also published for younger readers. Under the direction of Jürgen Weidenbach, the publisher's turnover grew strongly in the following four years. Since 2008, cbj and cbt have been two independent publishers with their own hardcover and paperback programs. In the course of this, the “omnibus” brand was discontinued and various titles were transferred to the cbj and cbt programs. In 2009 cbj audio started producing audio books for children and young people. Previously, the offer was marketed under the “audionauten” brand. Since the renaming, cbj audio has been operating as an independent publisher of the Random House publishing group, which is organizationally assigned to Random House Audio. In August 2014 Nicola Bartels took over the publishing responsibility for cbj and cbt, the publishing director is Jürgen Weidenbach to this day.

Due to its history, the Süddeutsche Zeitung described the publishing house in 2004 as a "traditional publisher in the industry". Today, cbj publishes a wide range of literature from children's books to young people's books for readers between the ages of three and 14, as well as "All Age" titles. The publisher's range includes both paperback and hardcover books . In terms of content, the hardcover program includes picture books, illustrated children's books, reading stories and children's novels, as well as fantastic and socially critical scenarios for young people. In addition, cbj also publishes non-fiction books. The publisher also occasionally published apps .

The authors of cbj include German writers such as Ingo Siegner , Julian Press , Patricia Schröder , Usch Luhn and Ute Krause . In addition, cbj publishes German-language editions of international authors, for example Christopher Paolini (" Eragon "), Jonathan Stroud (" Bartimaeus "), Markus Zusak (" The Book Thief "), Michael Scott (" The Secrets of Nicholas Flamel ") and Tony DiTerlizzi (" The Spiderwick Secrets "). In addition, the publisher brings out book series such as "The Little Dragon Coconut" (Ingo Siegner), " Five Friends " ( Enid Blyton ) or "Nele" (Usch Luhn). In cooperation with GEOlino , classics of children's and young people's literature such as “The Jungle Book” or “Treasure Island” ( Robert Louis Stevenson ) were published under the name “GEOlino Library” . By September 2005 over 380,000 copies had been sold.

Every year cbj publishes around 240 novelties, and a total of over 2,000 titles are currently available.

Reading promotion

In the 1990s, C. Bertelsmann Jugendbuchverlag initiated the “I'll give you a story” campaign, which is held as part of World Book Day . In recent years, the publisher has achieved multiple print runs of over a million copies, most recently in 2015 with Dirk Ahner's “The Crocodile Gang on a Secret Mission” . In addition, cbj is a member of the working group of youth book publishers e. V. avj represents the interests of the industry and promotes projects and prizes in the field of children's and youth literature.
