Tony DiTerlizzi (born September 6, 1969 ) is an American illustrator and writer . He was best known for his collaboration with Holly Black on the fantasy series The Spiderwick Secrets (English original title "The Spiderwick Chronicles"). He works as an illustrator of children's books, materials for pen & paper role-playing games and fantasy books.

Life

He attended the Florida School of the Arts , where he studied graphic design, graduating from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale in 1992 . He then worked for the company Tactical Studies Rules (TSR) on its pen and paper role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons . His illustrations in the Planescape Campaign Setting , along with the concept graphics by Dana Knutson , are considered to be formative for the Planescape scenario. For example, the Planesape Campaign Setting praised the graphic design of the books, for which DiTerlizzi and his colleagues received the Origins Award in 1994 for the best graphic presentation of a role-playing game . The trading card game Blood Wars , which was derived from this and was published in 1995, was also co-designed by DiTerlizzi. After TSR was taken over by Wizards of the Coast in 1997 , he illustrated game materials and character manuals for the company (e.g. for the trading card game Magic: The Gathering ) and contributed to role-playing magazines such as Dragon .

In the late 1990s he also illustrated books such as Giant Bones by Peter S. Beagle , The Beloved Dearly by Doug Cooney, and Dinosaur Summer by Greg Bear . He also designed the book covers for many books. His fantastic pictures for works by JRR Tolkien , Anne McCaffrey and others have already received several awards. He had the greatest success so far with The Spiderwick Secrets .

DiTerlizzi also wrote several self-illustrated books.

Today he lives with his wife Angela and a daughter as a freelance writer, illustrator and filmmaker in western Massachusetts .
