Anne McCaffrey
Anne [Inez] McCaffrey (* 1. April 1926 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ; † 21st November 2011 under in Dragon Hold the Hill, County Wicklow ) was an American science fiction - and fantasy - writer . She is best known for her series Drachenreiter von Pern .
Life
Anne McCaffrey was born to George Herbert McCaffrey and Anne Dorothy McElroy McCaffrey. She had two brothers: Hugh McCaffrey and Kevin Richard McCaffrey. She went to school in Staunton , Virginia and studied Slavic languages and literature at Radcliffe College until 1947 . She then worked as a copywriter and studied singing and opera directing in the USA and Düsseldorf . She later worked at the Delaware Opera .
Anne McCaffrey married in 1950 and had three children: Alec Anthony (1952), Todd (1956) and Georgeanne (1959). The marriage was divorced in 1970; then she emigrated to Ireland . There she founded Dragonhold Ltd. and bred horses. She last lived in County Wicklow , Ireland , where she owned several racehorses and a property called "Dragonhold under the Hill".
Anne McCaffrey published her first short story in 1953, but she only became active as a writer after her first novel came out in 1967. At that time she began the cycle about the Dragon Riders of Pern , to which she owes her worldwide fame. During her lifetime she had already transferred the writing of the Pern novels - at least in part - to her son Todd, so that an end to this cycle is not in sight. She was still active until the end, even if she mostly only worked with co-authors - especially Elizabeth Ann Scarborough .
Anne McCaffrey died on November 21, 2011 at the age of 85.

The Federated Sentient Planets Universe
Much of McCaffrey's works are set in a government- dominated Federated Sentient Planets (FSP) universe.
The Chronicles of Pern
The planet Pern is a forgotten and thus isolated colonial world of the FSP.
One can argue about the order in which one should read the books. The author herself speaks of the two trilogies in the cycle
- The Dragonriders of Pern (Dragonflight, Dragonquest, The White Dragon)
- The Harper Hall Trilogy (Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums)
and describes the remaining volumes as "Individual Pern Novels".
For a good understanding, the order given by Heyne-Verlag today (at least up to volume 16) is optimal. The first six volumes build on each other, the others deal with the events mentioned in the previous volumes and describe them in more detail.

- A real annoyance was the book Dragon Dreams , called Volume 17 of the Pern Cycle for marketing reasons . Many German fans believed in a new Pern novel and were disappointed because it was only an anthology. The collectors weren't happy either, as the book contained hard-to-get volumes of the series at the time. In the meantime the anthology itself is a small rarity.
